Arca sem Noé

Sao Paulo has many classic modernist masterpieces. Most were build during the socialist spring in the sixties. An unique epoch - the dominant political ideology was perfectly aligned with the normative orientation of the Brazilian modernist architectural movement. It all ended with the ’64 putsch that plunged Brazil in a decades long military dictatorship.

On display here is a detail of the front facade of the Copan building (1963) on the Avenida Ipiranga, Sao Paulo. It’s an example of the first phase of Brazilian modernism, has 32 floors / height 112 m, 1160 apartments, 5000 people. It is the biggest structure in armed concrete of São Paulo. The eye catchers of the building are the curved concrete “brises soleil”.
It’s designed by Oscar Niemeyer, though he left the project before completion. His design follows the lines and principles of the modernist philosophy , envisioning a place where people with different ways of living and cultural identities could coexist in harmony. To facilitate that, various areas for recreation and meeting were projected, such as a cinema, a theatre, a big restaurant and a hotel.
Due to problems with the building permit and bankruptcy, the building process was halted for a few years and the project design modified - the hotel, the theatre and the big family apartments weren’t realized.

A pic from the Copan shot from another angle is in a WS.
A pic from a second phase (also known as “Paulista Brutalism”) modernist building, the FAU (USP) in Sao Paulo by J.B. Vilanova Artigas is here

An award winning (1995 Jabuti prize) book about living in the Copan building has been written by Regina Rheda : ”Arca sem Noé- Histórias do Edifício Copan” (Ark without Noah - Stories of the Copan building).
The book is a part of “First World Third Class and Other Tales of the Global Mix”, a translated compilation of her work (University of Texas Press 2005) – highly recommended.

PCS2 tech: cropped, altered the contrast, curves and levels for the whole pic and some elements separately, enhanced the color- and luminosity edges and surfaces, USM-ed , added a frame and saved for the web.

Hi Bert,
great graphic composition and your note is very complete.
These lines are very strong.
Well seen
Good WE
Philippe

Hallo Bert,

hi bert, love the geometry in this crop and the visual fluidity of the wave-like lines ... the WS gives us the entire dimmension and 'face' of the place.
well seen! good note, too!
thanks,
dora

Hallo Bert,

Hi bert, when I saw the thumbs I reconize the Copan. You had a nice idea with the close view.
The title was a great choice.
regards
Andre

Hi Bert,
Groeten,
Stef

Hi Bert
This picture is a pure graphisme. Th short cropping is interesting. It look like waves.
Excellent

Hi Bert,

beautiful POV of this beautiful building. It's sad to know that it has been forgotten. That's one of the symbols of São Paulo...very good capture!

Hello Bert,
A nice graphical shot on all these curves.
Regards, hey, almost one year ago the meeting, time speeds...

Hi Bert. An interesting and well-framed architectural study of the gently undulating shapes of this fine building. The WS is very useful to give the bigger picture, and at the same time it showcases your eye for the detail that you chose to be the main posting here.

Hi BErt, i like a lot the graphic impact of this image and the game of lines and shapes!
the image seems a BW, no colours here...
Well done!

ciao!

Hi Bert,

A truly fascinating picture to look at. The graphic composition with all the bending lines is excellent. Have a nice week-end!

Quite an interesting point of View Bert, that together with the note creates a perfect idea of a moment of Brazil´s history. The perspective is fantastic. Take care.

Hello Bert!
Great scene with very good tittle!
Very good idea to the photo!
Very good done!
Best regards!

Wonderful graphic abstract. It's one of those optical illusions that seem to move as you scroll down the screen. Well seen and composed to show this portion of the architecture, and thanks for the WS to show us the context.

Bert,
Nice catch !
