Photographer’s Note

The photo:

If you browse my photos in TE, you will hardly find one displaying people, most of them are about nature or architecture. It is very difficult to me to show people without feeling the result was banal. However, sometimes people are nicely incorporated into the image, like here.
This is an abandoned beach deteriorating at Apaga-Fogo (Fire-tackling) beach, near a small fishermen village in Arraial D'Ajuda (see below). It has so vivid colors, despite its decaying, that became a natural target for any photographer around (I was the only one, I think). The man in second plane is a fisherman, waiting for his fellows, coming from the left.

The place:

The so-called "Costa do Descobrimento" (Discovery Coast) comprises the section of the Brazilian coastline first visited by the Portuguese explorers. Because of its historical, cultural and scenic values this landscape has a profound meaning to the national heritage. Today, it is an important touristic destination because of the match of wonderful beaches, historical sites and nightlife.
Arraial D'ajuda is one of the most charming of these touristic cities (in fact, it is a small district of Porto Seguro). The way to arrive there is by ferry, across the Buranhém river, where beautiful views (luxurious mangrooves, reefs and the meeting of river and sea) can be observed during the ride.
Rich in natural beauties, Arraial has 20 kilometers of beaches with crystal-clear and warm waters , crossed by rivers and surrounded by coconut palms and cliffs. Desert and calm beaches also are part of the local scenery. The cookery offers from a very picturesque local food to international dishes.

Shipwrecks and boats washed up on shore always make great subjects for photographers and you really found a good one. I like the man sitting on the beach like he's waiting for help to arrive, though it's been a very long time.

Oi, Sérgio! A foto é muito bonita esteticamente (composição, nitidez, cores e profundidade) e na concepção, tal como vc explicita em sua ótima nota. Também acho complicado fotografar gente sem que haja um sentido nisso. Minha tendência tem sido "limar" os humanos rs! Mas vou aprender a lidar com eles - nas fotos! Abraço! Miguel.

You got stunning colours here with the sky and the boat. It is interesting to see that depsite these two are so bright, the more delicate green of the sea remains an essential element of the beauty of your picture.

Wow, this is a very beautiful picture. Very impressive PoV with the boat taking most of the frame and the little man on the left. The boat looks massive in comparison. Very good colors. The sand behind the man looks overexposed though. Good job :-)

Oi Sergio, a really beautiful capture of this wreck and its delightfuk surroundings. The PoV is well chosen and enhances the rakish design of the ship greatly. The colours and definition are superb and the lone person is a vital add to the atmosphere of this one. Xcellent, parabens!

Excellent composition especially dynamic thanks to inclusion of the guy who's dwarfed by the boat. The green of the plant and the red of the boat make the foreground very attractive. That sky is such a stunning blue.

this is a great picture! i am glad there is a person in the frame. i don´t think that having a person in the shot is banal at all, if anything it gives a great sense of scale and life to places. this picture, as well as "fenced beauty", is very poetic and make me feel the sand on my feet.. thanks for sharing!

ps. I noticed on your intro page you're thinking of a D50 this year. That was my first camera too, however, I've since upgraded to a D80 (not much more expensive) and it's superb, I can wholly recommend it.

Hi Sergio, already saw that one in your random 3 pictures in intro, i will help it reach 3 digits cause it really deserves it !
Nice is a great picture, best of all is the isolation of those 2 subject, the little one (the human) in comparison to the huuuge one (the boat). All under a deep blue sky and this almost green sea.
Effective PP and excellent compo.

Olá Sergio,

ainda não tinha visto essa foto. Caramba, que espetáculo. A perpectiva do barco está ótima e contrasta bem como o bonito céu azul. O Sol estava forte mas mesmo assim vc soube controlar bem a luminosidade. Agradecendo por ter colocado uma de minhas fotos como favorita e por mérito da própria foto essa também vai aos meus.

The wreck is very well framed, and inclusion of the meditating person adds an intriguing element as conserns what he is up to...

I can see exactly why this photo has gotten so much attention. There are few photos on this site over the 100 point mark, and even fewer that actually deserve the mark. This one definitely belongs as you used the frame perfectly placing the boat. The gorgeous blue sky, and the solitary man.
