As I am again in Brazil, this weekend I made a short visit to one of my favorite spots near Sao Paulo; which is the village of Campos do Jordao. You will find more info in my previous post here.
It was a nice fresh day and the 1700 meters above sea level where the town is located helped with a beautiful clean sky.
When the afternoon was ending, I decided to visit the Auditorium Park to assist a show. this is a theatre on one of the hills, surrounded by a nice park full of Araucaria trees, which are characteristic of the region.
I was taking some photos of some very high Araucaria trees under the soft light of sunset, when I noticed that the moon was perfectly visible between the branches; and then again, I could not resist switching lenses to my longest available at the moment (200mm + 1.4 TC) and took a couple of shots.
I was not sure which one to post as ‘main’, but finally decided for the closer view of the moon, surrounded by a somehow still light sky. Then, in the workshop you will find two ‘bonuses’, an un-cropped version of the moon photo, and a full view of the Araucaria trees, taken at 18mm.
I think that the very clean air and the light, almost the start of the magic hour, helped with the results.
In the case of the cropped photos, the processing did not include anything special, except that curves and USM where applied in multiple successive passes, with very light settings.
The shadows of the left of the ‘main’ photo are some branches that I opted not to clone.
Raw Capture at ISO 200 – f4 – 1/500s @ 200 mm.+ 1.4 TC
Post processing: Raw file conversion (DPP) to JPG, then (PS CS) cropping, contrast (curves), USM, frame, and save for the web.

I though this was made it by a telescope, is a exelent job really, congratulations, exelent picture.
Rossignol (2289) 2006-05-09 16:25
Good detail and texture, Carlos. There's a little noise in the surrounding blue of the sky, but that's probably down to the magnification and cropping to further enlarge the view of the moon.
MIG13 (0) 2006-05-09 16:30
Que foto, Carlos! Impressionante nitidez! Miguel.

Superb picture .
I like it a lot. Congratulations. Uğur
cyrrhus (2878) 2006-05-09 16:55
To be honest, I thought it was impossible to take pictures of the moon like this under daylight with a "simple" telelens.
I thought you has cheated some how... using a balloon or whatever ;-)
Impressive...muito bom...the blue background is perfectly suited... she should appear more often in daylight ! ;-)
expatinspain (364) 2006-05-09 17:01
I never thought that one could take a picture of a moon like this with just a 200mm lens. What does the +1.4 TC mean?
AthaPan (0) 2006-05-09 17:02
I will give you today 2 smileys but I still have a question:
How could you zoom with 200mm so far the moon???
I had even with 300mm my problems to scale it that way.
Speak to you

This one is absolutely brilliant.
We can see all details and textures of the moon.
Everything is perfect...so if you don't mind this one goes to my favourites gallery.
You are luckier than me...I never had catch the moon with this size or definition...and I have a 70-210mm lens...but I can´t :-(

jafadabret (56497) 2006-05-11 14:49
Quel beau travail, Carlos !
john_c (24662) 2006-05-11 18:49
A fascinating portrayal of the blue moon. I really like the contrast between the shaded and sunlit parts of the moon. The black portions to the left are a little distracting, but overall a very fine and dramatic shot.
pitai (3985) 2006-05-11 21:28
Hola Carlos!

PixelTerror (0) 2006-05-20 6:19
A very well detailed one, not sure I have seen any blue hour moon shot before on Te so it is a nice addition, I believe you had to crop this one quite severely and I like the way it came out.
Have a nice week end,
Didi (54995) 2006-05-20 13:52

Hi Carlos, Excellent capture of the moon with a lot of details showing well. Congratulations. Murray.
LeToun (0) 2006-07-10 4:18
hello Carlos !
It's just perfect
PrzemekN (140) 2006-07-10 4:24
This is really fantastic - I think we can seldom see the moon in that way - when there is no doubt it is a...well...real object in the sky and not a "big painting" (usually it looks rather flat)
Very good photo in my oppinion. The slight brighter perimeter of the moon - from the left side (probably due to the photo-matrix characteristics) looks as if there is atmosphere there =).
mire (88) 2006-07-10 4:46
I like it very much!!
CarmenSofia (96) 2006-07-10 4:52
What a fantastic picture, it´s just magnificent to see just the moon, the colour of the background woderful. Very good shot
folas (232) 2006-07-10 5:02
it's really wonderful. But I prefered the one you have in your workshop where the moon is more far.
Brendon (285) 2006-07-10 5:33
First off, a big thanks for all the wonderful and useful information you have provided us in taking better moon shots. I'm still trying...and one of these times I will prevail. That said, I simple marvel at your moon photo. Great work.
TFS your photos and your ideas!!!
riclopes (35577) 2006-07-26 3:42
14 favoritos explicam o sucesso desta imagem. Muitos parabéns!
Um abraço amigo,

wow! what can I say..Im impressed. This one is a rarity and I fully appreciate it as such.
you can be proud of this shot!
jinju (14265) 2006-08-10 3:24
Hi, this photo has some of the elements that would cause me to hate it. Its a moon shot, its bulls eye cenetered...so heres my surprise. Im really loving it. I think the reason is that for some reason youve managed to create an illusion as if the moon was hanging in the air not up in space. I cant explain it, but this is one of the better moon images...just look at your score.
veronika (6052) 2006-08-10 8:07
Wooooow Carlos, incredible amazing picture filled with moon, great atmosphere :)
bantonbuju (51765) 2006-08-15 17:05
this is as if the whole image was unreal, the moon, the blue tonalty and the shadows creeping into the image;
fascinating, not an easy job to take an interesting photo of the moon, you have succeeded :-))
best wishes, j.

Hi Carlos, This it A dream photo, oh how I envey you talent and perfection, it is truly perfect.
KellEy (1237) 2007-01-14 21:04
Crazy. I was debating on buying a similar lens for my Olympus E-330, now I'm sold.
This is fabulous and SO real!
The colours and clarity far exceed anything I've seen of the moon photos on the trek sites...out of this world!
borka (264) 2007-01-31 0:49
Really Amazing shot, one of my favorites. I have a question though : I don't understand how did you make the unlit part of the moon darker than the sky? I thought it is only possible to see the moon when it is lit by the sun, and is darker than the sky - I never thought that you can actually see something that is !darker! than the sky.. Is this how it was visible from that location, is it something you can only see high up in the mountains?
Albrecht (11281) 2007-03-14 6:27
Very sharp and good picture of the moon. The best possible according to the lens you have used. Nice job.
kiks (11749) 2007-03-14 6:36

cool shot! amazing lens. I'd love to buy one like that.
calimex (151) 2007-04-16 12:49
Wow, Carlos. This is a fabulous capture and presentation of the moon. This is the kind of shot that, like a sunset/sunrise, may seem cliche at first glance, but when you look at it closer you see a great work. In this case, you also have provided an informative note about this image, your personal experience when you took it, and the process for presenting it to us.
All in all, an excellent and masterful image!
Pattyjy (2180) 2007-09-05 1:40
Absolument sublime. Bravo. Amitié, Patty.

prashant29 (114) 2008-03-19 3:35
Brilliant shot Carlos !!
Something..which can not be put in the words by me. Thanks for the note...else i was thinking, you had gone for some space walk.
biswajit13us (138) 2009-07-25 0:01
wow that is simply suberb.
Could U just let me know that with Raw format capture what was the zoom factor before cropped it.
desman (2220) 2010-03-13 0:42
deOliveira (54) 2012-01-19 10:44
I ve' been in Campos do Jordão when I was kid. Unfortunately I had no camera.
It is a great shot, and is going to my favorites, although the black spot on left is a defect, that could be easily corrected with a image editor software. Congrats
Noel_Byrne (20694) 2012-03-06 11:27
I have no other word for this but spectacular. I have never ever seen the moon presented this way. Bravo!!
cornejo (27937) 2013-08-13 9:33
