Photographer’s Note

These islands are off the Brazilian coast, near Angra dos Reis a couple of hours' drive south of Rio. They are accessible by tour boats which anchor just offshore, a swimmable distance from the beach. They are beautiful and (in the off season when I was there, at least) uncrowded, very peaceful and restful. That's the atmosphere I tried to capture in this image.

I was there as part of a half-day outing for conference participants, so I guess this qualifies as work!

Angra is a marvelous place and give us some special views to photograph. It's a pity that the weather was not so helpful at that time... it usually is.

Super composition, Ken! It is dangerous to compose like this since the boat can easily simpy chop the image in half, but your handling of exposure and tones makes this work very well with boat in foreground and mountains/sky in background.

You've captured the atmosphere that you described in your note very well here Ken. The empty beach and rainclouds over the mountains make it feel like the 'off-season'. The slightly grainy texture of the photograph adds to the atmosphere too. Cheers . . . David

I like this one for the peacefull still on this landscape nicely composed with the boat in front, the curving beachline an the mountains on several levels gradiant in the mist,the colors here are also very nicely balanced.
