Photographer's Note

This is the first portrait I made during my tour in Brazil. My wife kindly encouraged me to make it.

The first two days of our arrival, I made almost no shot since many people told me it was very dangerous in a town where violence is so famous and shown everyday by local networks.

I was a bit frustrated but it was a nice opportunity to taste (or test) the atmosphere of the City and recognize what are the safe area and what are the dangerous ones. Little by little, we had the feeling that it was probably exagerated and sure the difference in standards of leaving can be outrageously obvious but Brazilian people are so warm, kind and ready to welcome or discuss with any stranger that we felt rather confident and started to make picture from each kind of place : the Copacabana or Ipanema beaches; the Lapa or Santa Teresa historic areas.

I don't mean that it's always safe but like any big city and even Paris, I had the feeling that I could walk safely everywhere provided that I didn't exhibit expensive stuffs. And I could even use my camera provided it was during the day and with people walking around.

So, here I took this portrait from this smiling kid which told us the famous brazilian words : "tudo bem ?" which means "everything is ok ?". It was in Urca, a very calm area not so far from the "Sugar Loaf". As I guess it was the first use of my new camera in Rio, I was a bit nervous and tried to frame him completely. It's only when I came back to our small room in Santa Teresa in the evening that I saw that I cut his feet... What a pity ! So, I cropped the legs...

Cropped, levels adjusted, USM applied.
