The Ribbon of Bonfim or Bonfim ribbon is a typical souvenir and amulet from Salvador the capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia.
The original ribbon is supposed to be created in 1809 and disappeared in the early 1950s.
Known as a "THE MEASURE" of Bonfim due to the fact that it measures exactly 47 cm in length - the extent of the right arm of the statue of Jesus Christ the Lord of Bonfim - posted on the altar of the famous church of Bahia.
THE MEASURE was made of silk with the design and the name of the holy hand embroidery and finishing done in gold or silver ink.
It was worn on the neck as a necklace, which hung medals and holy cards , functioning as a bargaining chip : a promise to pay, the faithful carried a photo or a small wax sculpture representing the healed part of the body with the aid of the holy.
It is not known when the transition to the current ribbon wrist usage occurred, and the fact that in the mid -1960s the new ribbon was already sold on the streets of Salvador, when it was adopted by the Bahian hippies as part of his costume.
In the image thousands of ribbons tied by the visitants in the cast iron grid fence of the church yard.

hello Rui ~
i like this very much, a beautiful tapestry of bright & cheerful colors and a good note to go along with it. they way you have cropped it, one can almost feel them blowing in the breeze, while tethered to the iron railings. the red one, with the clear words, is perfectly placed in the center. a very appealing shot!

Bom dia Rui,
These ribbons make me think of the multicolor prayer flags from Himalaya. That's full of joy, I like it a lot ! The tight framing makes the picture artistical.
