Shot taken from the roof top of a home in a Rio favela (Rochinha). As you can see the buildings are built very close together, so close in fact that sunlight barely penetrates into the labarynth of alleys below. These buildings are all several stories high....homes on top of homes... when more room is needed they simply build upwards.
The favelas are often associated with crime and drugs(You may have seen favela life depicted in the movie 'City of God')and for many it can be a rough existence. However they are also the homes of thousands of honest ordinary people just going about their normal lives.
If you notice in the middle of the shot... a woman is standing lost in the sea of tin rooves. It's kind of how I felt at the time looking out...rather small and insignificant.
