Augustinians Recoletos Priests arrived in Sao Paulo and were instructed by the Archbishop Leopoldo Duarte e Silva to work with missionaries in the chapel of Our Lady of Saúde.

The following year, Priest Casto Delgado was appointed by the archbishop as the first parish priest. In 1918 São Paulo city was hit by a major epidemic of flu (the Spanish flu), and our priests Augustinians provided a great service to the community, bringing spiritual and material comfort to patients.

Also the priests were sick and the chapel was closed for several days and through the action of a family of parish the priests were assisted in their needs.

Thus the parish grew in number and pastoral activities. The priests Augustinians also provided assistance in the region of Santo Amaro. In 1922 Dom Duarte administered the sacrament of chrism to 1280 people and the chapel was not able to accommodate so many people and facing this problem rose the idea of building a new church.

In 1928 began the construction of the new church which was projected by the architect Gaudêncio Luiz Rossi. For seven years 15 masons worked on the construction of the church, which has 65 meters long and 16 wide.

The new church began to become reality on December 7, 1935, and although unfinished was solemnly inaugurated by the auxiliary bishop Dom José Gaspar Alfonseca e Silva.

The tower is one of the most beautiful of city and was built between 1943 and 1949. For a better view press F11.
