Leblon Vantage Point. You can see the Rio de Janeiro Sheraton Hotel and at its back Vidigal. Vidigal is the name of one of the most visible working class communities in Rio de Janeiro. It starts at the foot of Dois Irmaos Hills, and stretches almost all the way to Sao Conrado, on the other side of the twin hills.
Unlike the image you may have of a favela, all houses and buildings in Vidigal are masonry, and they have a view to Ipanema and Leblon that won't quit. Unfortunately there aren't guided tours like the ones offered at Rocinha.
Vidigal has an active community and there are several social projects helping to integrate residents - including theater groups and even a radio. The access to the favela is via Av. Niemeyer, the road that links Leblon to Sao Conrado. Vidigal is also the name of the small beach in front of Hotel Sheraton.
Mirante do Leblon vai ficar 30 vezes maior
Em primeira mão projeto de expansão do Mirante do Leblon. O prefeito Cesar Maia - que vai executar a obra - adorou a idéia, que nasceu de uma conversa do presidente da CEDAE, Wagner Victer, com o governador Sérgio Cabral e o deputado João Pedro (DEM-RJ).
O carioca poderá sair do mirante e caminhar sobre uma pista sinuosa de pedras portuguesas até a praça onde hoje pontifica a estátua do grande Zózimo Barrozo do Amaral sem precisar descer pela Niemeyer. Para tanto serão construídos dois deques sobre o canal: um ao nível do mar e outro de seis metros de altura. O empréstimo da área vem da Cedae, já que ali existe a elevatória do esgoto construída por Vargas.
Trata-se de uma obra barata, para a qual basta vontade política, que a parceria Cesar-Cabral está tratando de recuperar. |

Hello Marque
Initially I didn't see much in this photo, but when you take a little time and give the full view a closer look you see the contrasts.
I guess this must for many the typical view on Brazil and Rio: the big hotels at the beach and the workingclass town or propably slums pushed back up agains the hill/mountain side.
What really strikes me here is the excellent saturation and brilliance of the colour. Combined with a subtle highlight and shade it really makes the details of economical contrast quite visible and not least obvious.
