Paquetá is an island-neighbourhod in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro. The name of the island is a Tupi (Brazilian Indian language) word meaning "many shells", a reference to the plentiful shells on the island's beaches. No cars are allowed on the island, so travel is limited to bicycles and horse-drawn carriages.
The ever-present beauty of nature is everywhere in this island,specially in the park. It's trully a paradise that seems hand-carved by Mother nature itself. Atop the lookout point,a panoramic view unfolds-there's the Governor's residence at "Moreninha's beach","Bocoeo Island.
If you believe in lov,don't miss this one:just along the main street,there's an "Imbondeiro macho" tree,(also called "Obaoba),1.628 years old,better known as "fat maria". The locals believe that if you kiss the tree's trunk and make a wish it will come true. They believe also that the kiss will bring you luck.
Paquetá has twenty baobabs, a type of African tree - the only ones in Brazil. One of them is called "Maria Gorda" (Fat Maria) ” residents kiss Fat Maria for luck.
Since 1883 Paquetá has been part of Rio de Janeiro municipality. From the graveled streets one is able to observe buildings of various architectural styles, including the Mansion where D. Joao VI stayed, and the house that belonged to José Bonifacio de Andrada e Silva, the patriarch of independence.

o cavalheiro parece mesmo estar a esperar alguém, o que sugere o romantismo que existe nesta ilha que eu adoro...
o único senão é a linha do horizonte.
