A favela is the term for a slum in Brazil, most often within urban areas. The first favelas appeared in the late 19th century and were built by soldiers who had nowhere to live. Some of the first settlements were called bairros africanos (African neighbourhoods). This was the place where former slaves with no land ownership and no options for work lived. Over the years, many former black slaves moved in.
Even before the first favela came into being, poor citizens were pushed away from the city and forced to live in the far suburbs. However, most modern favelas appeared in the 1970s due to rural exodus, when many people left rural areas of Brazil and moved to cities. Unable to find a place to live, many people ended up in a favela.
Rocinha is the largest hill favela in Rio de Janeiro. Although favelas are found in urban areas throughout Brazil, many of the more famous ones exist in Rio.
Cidade de Deus, Santa Teresa and Vidigal are some of the most renown favelas in Rio de Janeiro.

Great detail in the shot of the buildings of the Favela. Good POV. I can understand why they objected to the amount of money that was spent on presenting the World Cup when people have to live in hovels.
Hope you enjoyed your football.

a fascinating collection of buildings and I can imagine a very interesting place to visit. Your POV works very well and there are so many details visible. The composition is also excellent. My compliments!

After all the glamourous picture of the World Cup we have seen over the past few weeks, you show us here the other side of medal. You captured the Favela superbly here and although it is a slum, compared to many other slums around the world, this one looks quite sophisticated and well kept.
have a great weekend

Those Favelas could not be cloned out of Rio by photoshop - I am sure someone in Brasil would much like the idea. It is a part of the big city, source of many concern before the tournament, and a great burden on tourism industry.
Inspite all said, you taken a grand documentary photo from the poit taken, vivid colors and clear elements well managed. Excelent photo of the les seen part of town.
Enjoy a nice weekend,

Bien visto y mejor realizado.
Que disfrutes de un buen fin de semana.

This is a harsh reality that no government here knew to solve or was interested in fact to solve it. This image is impressive and you still managed to include that other architectural ensemble pink right. Very good your note.
A big hug and have a nice Sunday too

A cruel reality of Brazil. It's hard to see people living in such hard conditions there and gets you wonder why such a wonderful and rich country is in fact..poor?
Have a fine afternoon.
