Photographer’s Note

In the 18th century, Paraty was a principal center for the trade of gold and slaves. Countless numbers of the latter arrived at this port and countless amounts of gold left from here for Portugal. The town today is a jewel of colonial architecture and well worth seeing before one dies. The "flamboyant" tree (red like in blood) next to the canon speaks volumes about what once was Paraty.
