Photographer's Note

A view from Tiradentes, a little village frozen back in time. It's located between Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte.

It took us something like four hours to reach that beautiful village by car. The last hour drive was especially exhausting since i had to be very careful about all the bumps and holes on the way. I understood why people didn't care when I reached the village : there is no car but many horses !!!

Well, I'm kidding. Still, it was really nice to spend some time in that village since it was a completely different spirit from what we experienced in Rio de Janeiro, 15 million city.

That morning, we had an early walk with my wife and were pleased to see nice horses carriages like this one passing by. The city was calm until the kids wake up for school around 7:15. Quite soon, we were lost in the crowd of children running all around us. It was really fun to see them laughing, yelling around, so happy to meet again before entering schools.

The City was named after "Tiradentes" (the one who takes your teeth away literraly) as a tribute to the dentist Joaquim Jose da Silva Xavier who fought for the Republican ideas against the Empire. That period was called the "Inconfidencia" since he - among others - planned in 1789 to kill the governor and protest against the Tyranny of the Portuguese King, especially in that wealthy province called "Minas Gerais" from which Portugal extracted incredible amounts of gold and precious stones. Executed in 1792, Tiradentes became a famous symbol for the Republicans.
