Ouro Preto is located about 400 km to the north-west of Rio de Janeiro, close to Belo Horizonte, main city of the Minais Gerais state. When visiting Ouro Preto, one can discover that everything reminds that the city used to be the wealthiest place in Bazil under the Portuguese government. Indeed, during the ccc century, this place grew incredibly thanks to the gold extraction. Today, this 60,000 inhabitants city is divided into two parts :
- the modern one with a rather good economic activity focused on gem and metal extraction and agriculture,
- the historic part which is strongly focused on the tourism activity.
The historic part is really wealthy with a huge concentration of Portuguese buildings and churches as artefacts of the rich past. Indeed, there are about 12 churches on the top of the main hills of that city, each of them with very wealthy decorations, including the "Nossa Senhora do Rosario dos Pretos" church erected by the black slaves in the XVIIIth century. Indeed, slavery was part of the history of that city like many big cities in Brazil which grew up between the 16th and 19th century. One can remark that the first level of any building which was dedicated to the housing of the slaves working in the “Minais Gerais” which were also means the “General Mines” after the Portuguese imperial institution in charge of developing the gem and metal extraction in Brazil.
It was very nice to discover Ouro Preto at sunrise since its located in the mountains quite far from the sea. Thus, each morning there were a nice fog around the hills and the building before the sunlight started to warm the city.

A good light on the sharper village and the background, soft and peaceful with nice colours, nice to see this combination

I usually avoid to describe a photograph as resempling a painting, becouse most of the times is insulting for both arts. In this case, without meaning to insult anyone, the photograph does give me a painting feeling mostly due to how the mountain lines are shaped in front of the fog and the fairy - tale look of the buildings of the village. Also I found your notes about the place very informative. Very well done !

Que bela foto! Você conseguiu captar as belas cores e formas do lugar.

Hi Steven, sorry no smileys left today, but you trully deserve one with this excellent shot. Composition is right on with equal amount of town, miuntain and sky. I love the way the town is centered and the colours of both the town and the sky are magnificent. Regards Daniel

Very nice composition. Lovely atmosphere with the pretty warm soft colours and the mist in the valley. Great details on the buildings too. Well done.
