Brazil's rural area of São Caetano (Rio Novo do Sul municipality), marked by its mountainous relief, the beginning of the Serra do Mar, was the destination of many European immigrants (Swiss, Belgian, German, Dutch, etc.), who were given land by the imperial government in the 1850-60s, for the purpose of colonization and development. Likewise, this was the case of this property.

The title is a reference to the bovine formation in the shape of an "y" that can be seen in the picture, and also to the Brazilian regional interjection, from the state of Minas Gerais (MG), uai!, which reads as the letter y. It`s usually followed by the interjection "sô", a form uttered to denote wonder, amazement: Uai sô?! (y so). Minas Gerais is a contiguous state to Espírito Santo (ES), where São Caetano is located, sharing some cultural features and seasonal tourist movement, specially in summertime, when “mineirins” (mi-ner-ins), the inhabitants of MG, crowd the shores of Espírito Santo.

As terras em que atualmente se acha o município de Rio Novo do Sul, constituíram, primitivamente, a antiga Imperial Colônia do Rio Novo. O povoamento da região deve-se à pertinácia do Major Caetano da Silva, proprietário no município de Itapemirim, que, através da Associação Colonial do Rio Novo, obteve do governo, em 1855, autorização para explorar as terras devolutas que formavam toda aquela região, executadas apenas as terras pertencentes aos Salles, hoje denominada São Domingos. A fim de promover o desenvolvimento da região, as terras da antiga Colônia foram vendidas em pequenos lotes aos imigrantes que o Major Caetano trouxera da Europa. Em 6 de Março de 1880, Rio Novo passou a constituir distrito do município de Itapemirim. Em 1893, criado o município de Rio Novo, com território desmembrado do município de Itapemirim. Sua instalação ocorreu a 6 de Janeiro de 1894. Finalmente, em 1953, o município passou a denominar-se Rio Novo do Sul. O rio que serve de limite municipal, ao sul e sudeste, deu origem ao topônimo, Rio Novo do Sul.
