I was in the central area of Rio Grande city when I took this image. I used the whole zoom of my camera to get this view from São José do Norte, a small town located in the other side of Patos Lake, around 5 kilometers far the place where I was.
Patos lake is the biggest Brazilian lake, it is located near of the sea, separated by a very tiny sandy peninsula. Here we can see the southern-most area of the lake, in the point where it is almost throwing its waters in the sea. From here to the northern area of the lake are more than 200 kilometers, where is located Porto Alegre, the capital city of Rio Grande do Sul state. Here we can see the central area of São José do Norte, 7 kilometers ahead is the ocean. During the "Farrapos War" , a civil war that wanted independence of Rio Grande do Sul from Brazilian empire, the navy of the rebels stayed closed inside the lake because the Brazilian imperial troops had took control of Rio Grande city and the entrance of the lake. Garibaldi, who was helping the rebels, had an idea, they did the boats to cross the tiny sand peninsula between the lake and the sea, the boats were put over rouded trunks and the men and animals took them to the sea and they attacked Laguna city, taking control of it and using it like its port.Anyway Brazilian empire won and the independence of Rio Grande do Sul was forgot. I can't imagine how Brazil would be without this state..

Eu estava na área central de Rio Grande quando fiz esta foto. Usei todo o zoom da minha câmera para conseguir esta vista de São José do Norte, uma pequena cidade, localizada do outro lado da Lagoa dos Patos, o maior lago do Brasil, localizado próximo ao mar e separado dele por uma estreita península arenosa. Eu estava a cerca de 5km distante daquela cidade. Vemos aqui a parte extremo-sul do lago, próximo ao local onde suas águas desaguam no mar; deste ponto do lago até seu extremo-norte são cerca de 200 km, é lá que a capital do estado, Porto Alegre, se localiza. Vemos aqui a igreja de São José do Norte, o mar está localizado cerca de 7 km adiante daquele ponto onde está a igreja. ---- Durante a guerra dos Farrapos, uma guerra civil que opôs rebeldes republicanos ao governo do Brasil imperial, a marinha dos rebeldes ficou presa dentro das águas do lago, já que as tropas imperiais haviam tomado controle de Rio Grande e da entrada da lagoa. Garibaldi auxiliava os rebeldes e teve a ideia de levar os barcos cruzando a estreita faixa de areia entre o lago e o mar, levando os barcos sobre troncos roliços, puxados por homens e animais. Ao chegar ao mar atacaram Laguna e tomaram seu porto. Contudo, as tropas do império brasileiro ganharam a guerra e a independência gaucha foi esquecida. Não consigo compreender como seria o Brasil sem este importante estado.
