One evening, we came across the "Pascoa" procession (standing for Easter day... Thanks Celso Marino) in the center of Salvador. The penitents walked from the "Igreja da Ordem do Terceira do Carmo" up to the "Igreja São Fransisco" passing across the "Pelourinho" area.
Frankly speaking, seeing these dozens of people deeply involved in Religion in that amazing historic location where the density of churches and 17th and 18th century is so high was a unique and unforgetable experience.
I believe it was only a test for the march which would take place the following Friday but the devotion and the emotion emerging from that march was so strong that it seemed as important as the Friday's march itself.
This character was heading the march with his wipe. He was surrounded by few folks with iron chains and many others holding flags, Crosses, wooden tablets making a terrible sound from time to time. These sounds, the long silences, the slowness of the march in the middle of that majestic architecture conveyed an incredible sadness feeling.
I believe the purpose of the ceremony is to have these characters pray for Christ who sacrificed himself for the human sins.
Cropped, USM applied, color balance adjusted and ran through Neatimage.

Ca fait assez peur cette tenue... Ca me fait penser aux nazareños des Pâcques espagnoles. Belle capture.

Beautiful Steven. You always delight us with you high quality images. I've been to Salvador many times and can perfectly understand what you mean. Salvador is exactly what you said.. a unique experience.
I believe you mention the Easter day, correct ? In fact it's Páscoa in Portuguese.
Congratulations for this nice one.

Nice colors. The pointed hood also remembers the "farricocos" of Easter Procession in Goiás Velho city. Greetings

Well, I think most of the words and adjectives I wanted to use have already been mentioned by those who proceed before me. However, this image has an intensity to it which from a Western perspective may be perceived as quite shocking. It's very much the unwritten elements of this photograph that make it so strong, particularly given US history. Well taken photograph.
