COLORS OF PELOURINHO, a photo from Bahia, Northeast

Photographer's Note

Pelourinho is the historical center of Salvador da Bahia city, there are lots of marvelous baroque churches and colonial big houses; in these last decades most of this area was restored. Here we can see some façades under a rainy day, the place was addorned to a party.
Salvador was the first capital of Brazil, founded by Portuguese in 1549 and invaded by the Dutches in the next century. Nowadays it is the 3rd largest Brazilian town. Salvador is named "Black Rome", black because most of its population have African blood and the African influence is strong in the religion, food, dance, music, etc.. It is called Rome because there are dozens of baroque churches, a legend says there is a baroque church to each day of the year..
This is an analogical photo took in 1999.

O Pelourinho é o centro histórico de Salvador e é composto por admiráveis igrejas barrocas e casarões seculares; nas últimas décadas boa parte desta área foi restaurada. Vemos aqui algumas fachadas sob chuva, o local estava enfeitado para alguma festa.
Salvador foi a primeira capital do Brasil, fundada em 1549 e invadida no século seguinte pelos holandeses. É a terceira maior cidade do Brasil e é apelidada de "Roma Negra" : Roma, por possui dezenas de igrejas barrocas, dizem até que há uma para cada dia do ano; negra porque a maior parte de sua população tem sangue africano e a influência africana é forte na comida, na dança, na música e na religião..
Tirei sta foto em 1999 com minha velha câmera analógica.

Hi Jorge,
you write that this is an analogue photo taken in 1999.. but the photo information says: "Date Taken: 2011-08-16" ;)
Why so?
Anyway, this photo shows us the phenomenon which I observed in some cities, including Luzern: the different bright colours of the houses produce an interesting effect of "sunshine"! in sunny weather they simply radiate with wonderful bright colours, and in rainy weather (like in this photo) they "substitute" the missing sunshine and become "little suns" themselves :)

Interesting good composition; nice to see two people chatting in the rain :)

Apesar de ter sido com a analõgica e num dia de chuva, a foto está boa.Essa fachadas coloridas e ainda por cima decoradas, merecem bem umas fotos. Boas cores e nitidez. E foi uma boa ideia teres incluido as pessoas!

Hello Jorge,

I have lots of weakness for colors. These buildings have nice pastel colors. Like the architectural details. Nice to see 2 people chitchatting in this almost deserted road. The image has nice depth.

I like the colors on the facade that differ from each, I am sure it still looks that way nowadays, as was in 1999.

Very beautiful pastel colors of these colonial houses.
I did not know that Salvador was the first capital of Brazil and that was called "Black Rome".
The note on the origin of this name is very interesting.

Olá Jorge,
fine capture of these colourful houses of the Pelourinho. I still remember these colonial houses very well. The first time I was at the Pelourinho was in April 1991 and there were only a few brave tourists who went on the streets at night. The last time I was there was in the year 2000 and it was no problem to walk through the streets at night anymore. Times are changing...

Muito interessante casas típicas com varandas que têm belas cores adornando Cilimi, belas imagens.
A fachada das casas são pintadas de cores diferentes, uma boa aparência.
