Photographer’s Note

This photo was taken in the naturalistic park of Mangal das Garças (Mangrove of the herons), in Belém. In the WS you can see the same scene from a more distant POV. I chose this closer view because i think it gives a better perception of the mightiness of the plant.

Victoria is the genus of giant water lilies in the plant family Nymphaeaceae typical from the Amazon River Basin and the Parana-Paraguay Basin in South America. They have very large leaves that float on the water's surface, the most well known and largest species, Victoria amazonica, has a leaf that is up to 3 m in diameter on a stalk 7–8 m in length, it can support up to 40kg if they are well distributed on its surface. Victoria amazonica is native to the shallow waters of the Amazon River basin, such as oxbow lakes and bayous. The flowers are white the first night they open and turn pink during the first hours of the day, they are up to 40 cm in diameter, and are pollinated by scarab beetles (cyclocefalo casteneaea).
