Cutting salt bricks in the Salar de Coipasa is a tedious job, but its the only revenue for most people living around the salar. This is particularly true for inhabitants of Villa Vitalina and Coipasa. This last village being established on a volcanic island in the middle of the salt lake.
Thanks to high-resolution Ikonos images on Google Earth, you can clearly observe the irregular sutures left on the salt crust by their activity. "here"

During the rainy season (here january 2004) a thin layer of water covers the salt excavations, making the working conditions even harder. Not to mention the "El niño" phenomenon which sometimes brings more than 1,5m water ! In 1997, works were stopped for month due to severe inundation and Coipasa was almost inaccessible (there are no boats in the region!).

Salt workers are organized in cooperatives in order to share transport costs towards the city of Oruro (200km). There salt bricks are either sold in their crude form for cattle consumption, or they are crushed, refined and mixed with some iodine to be consumed by humans.

This picture is a scanned slide. I dediced to present it as a panorama and remove the mountainous background format to concentrate vision on the people at work.

Technical data :
Scan 2780x1890 in (3x8 bits)
Autoprofile noise removal (with NeatImage)
Added brightness and contrast (with PSP)
Sharpened and Cropped to 2780x610 for TE panorama
Sampling resharpen and framing for the small version 800x250 pixels)

The full scene is visible in the workshop

Bonjour Eric,

Hi Eric,
A panorama for this excellent scene. The analogy is great for your composition and the reflection very well seen.A very good one!
Best wishes,
Thomas

First I thought it was snow...
Great composition and colours. The full version is also very good. I'd make a crop cutting clouds just above the montain but leaving the left side of the picture - in my opinion the two sticks reflected in water are also an important part of the composition

Hi Eric,

I have to admit that i failed to get there this year...did not find anyone crazy enough to join nor even a guide to drive to Coipasa...according to the reports most of the area nearby and especially the roads were still under water so i kinda envy you this view...but i doubt there was anything exceptional this year in terms of El niño...the panoramic version gives this image some other "dimension", the crop a different perspective thus i still like the regular version the most...maybe 'cause it's still connected to this planet;-)...you managed an unusual purple cast?...cheers, arturo

Bonjour Eric,
Daniel.

Hallo Eric
