Amazing Flamingos at Laguna Hedionda. This area of Bolivia, south of the Salar is a martian-like terrain of volcanic lakes and mountains. There are hot springs, geysers and sulphurous lakes of unnatural colour. Difficult to understand how anything can survive or thrive out here, but these Flamingos are an incredible presense in an unreal landscape.

***(Thanks for the comments and critiques all, I have rescanned this shot from the original again and posted to workshop to try get it right!! - The orginal print doesnt have many of the problems pointed out on this submission)***

Striking picture, although the light has done havok with your contrasts. What sort of metering did you use? It also may affect the sharpness - the birds are a bit blurry, but sharpening them may increase artifacts quickly with such high contrast.

Beautiful composition, I really like these birds and their reflect.
A pity that the image lacks of sharpness...

Hello Andrew,
the quality of the picture (grain) could be a bit better, but it is wonderful shot.
Good eye! Thank you for sharing.

It lacks sharpness but is very nice. You just got them all in a row, almost perfectly spaced, and with the legs in a position like walking.

hi Andrew,
very nice composition,and reflections.
sad about the quality and colors.
Well seen.

Tom

I am not sure why everyone takes issue with quality, looks all right to me, blown highlights on the birds bother me, but apart from that this is a fine image.

Hi Andrew,

It’s a very good composition, nice reflections.
It’s a pity that the quality isn’t to OK.
Maybe a wrong jpeg compression or something like that.

Hi Andrew,
Good picture, kind of funny. Yes, I would have prefered it sharper. Sure, the conditions of lighting was probably difficult, birds seems to me over and underexposed at the same time. But still, for the composition you made, I applaud! TFS!
Claire

Great shot en beautiful colours. Regards frans

Wonderful shot Andrew. Composition is good, this shot may also work well in monochrome.
Well done.

Hi Andrew
Nice shot and good compo and well cropped.. Well seen and captured moment.
< regards Albrecht >

dear andrew
this is one is the best among i found during this week... well timing, perfect colors..
(but i think the sharpening is too much and hence noise is more...)
congrats

Hi Andrew,
Composition is excellent - did you have a short flamingo chat and asked them nicely to pose for you?

As already mentioned quality is not as good as the composition...

As you mentioned scanning might be one factor.
Another one is the very strong contrast between sun and shade in such altitude.

Hey Andy!!!

Great use of the reflections. The multisubjects composition is very good too.

Well done,

Itamar

Hi Andrew, This is an amazing shot of the flamingos in a row. I thought I caught 3 Pelicans in a row was a good luck. You show me that you were able to capture the four in a single file with there reflections. A nice capture.

nice one, very simple, but very attractive. great scene - four flamingos, four reflections of flamingos. nice composition and colors. nice image

Awesome pic Andrew! You're right! It is quite similar to mine! How cool that they were taken on opposite sides of the planet! :)

Hi Andrew,
this is simply an amazing capture...very well cropped...it looks almost as it was scanned from a slide...thanks for sharing it...
the sharpness is not perfect but i'm also strugglin' to scan some of my images...the results do always differ from one would expected...cheers, artur

very nice balance and spacing in composition! even the position of the heads of the flamigo are in a pattern. if only the picture wasn't as grainy, it'd be perfect!

Wonderful image! Great capture of their reflections and different head positions! Well done! Too bad the image couldn't scan a bit better, but I imagine the original is perfect!

Nice miror effect (birds and their legs) well framed too.

Hi Andrew - excellent timing, birds are so uncooperative when I try to photograph them, the reflections make a super shot even better.

What a funny picture, like the beatles crossing a lake.

Hi Andrew
Nice shot. I kmow this is very difficult to obtain details without grain. For info Lipez area is in Potosi departement, not Oruro .
JP

Salar de Uyuni is in Potosi Département, not ORURO (Coipasa salar is in Oruro). Please change the location.
Thanks

Felicidades Andrew, una composición muy hermosa, me gusta por la luz, por la alineación de los flamencos y sobre todo por los reflejos del agua.... una foto preciosa.

Un abrazo desde España ............... Paco
