Detail photo of National Congress (Government) Palace located at Plaza Murillo in La Paz, Capital city of Bolivia.
La Paz, is Bolivia’s third most-populous city, the seat of the country’s government. The city sits in a bowl surrounded by the high Andes mountains. As it grew, the city of La Paz climbed the hills, resulting in varying elevations from 3,200 to 4,100 m.

Overlooking the city is towering triple-peaked Illiami (6,438m a.s.l.), which is always snow-covered and can be seen from several spots of the city, including from the neighboring city of El Alto where the La Paz International Airport is located. El Alto is the Highest International Airport in the world with the runay elevation at 4,061m a.s.l..

Due to lower air density at this altitude during warm day time, the larger JET airplanes can start and land at this airport only during night time or early morning with reduced cargo load.

Illimani was the site where Boeing 727 Eastern Air Lines Flight 980 from Paraguay to La Paz crashed on January 1, 1985, with 29 fatalities caused by poor weather and visibility.

I’ve posted Illiami photo in this gallery some time ago. You can see it here:
