The white Bengal tiger is on the way to extinction. Single they exist something but of 200 specimen at world-wide level. The female of the photography, is in the Zoo of Buenos Aires and in November of 2003 it had 6 puppies. In the total of 4 childbirths until now, it has had 16 young of the species.
The white tigers are not albinos. The albinism is a genetic mutation in which the individuals lack melanina completely, the substance that pigments the skin of the mammals of dark color. But the white tiger is not a case of albinism, it can see itself in the color of its rays. If they were albinos would have the eyes of pink color and they would not have rays, that is to say, total absence of melanina.
In fact the white tigers are a variety of the tiger of Bengal that is original of Rewa, a central province in India. The showy aspect of bred the white tigers motivated the one that were maintained and in captivity; in fact the three fourth parts of the white tigers that exist find in zoological. The variety of white tiger corresponds to a recesivo gene that stays in the DNA of some individuals and that possibly activates. Therefore a white tiger can come from two tigers orange, while both Parents have the corresponding gene.

That's a very impressive and beautiful cat. Their huge paws never cease to amaze me... If you like those cats and have the time, I recommend the book "Life of Pi", which is about a boy, a lifeboat and a Bengal tiger.

Nice picture (even though the backround is not ideal). I think a closer crop would be more apropriate. (by the way, "Life of Pi' is an amazing book)

Thanks for sharing, Ricardo. Very beautiful animal, very nice picture. One of my favourites!
I guess I would have cropped tighter round the tiger, at least the top and right sides.

Thank you for the wonderful image and informative note. I am adding this to the Endangered theme. I think the image is fine, but might have been a little better with slightly darker shadows.

A este muchacho lo conozco! Tengo otra foto en TE del mismo bicho. Me hubiera gustado que te acerques un poco mas, pero necesitas un zoom bueno para llegar cerca.

Very interesting note! I also like the cold colors of the photo as well the POV of the tiger which is well placed in the composition. maybe a bit more saturation and contrast could be nice.
