Mate is the national drink in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. It is an infusion of a herb, called yerba mate, with hot water. This infusion is usually done in a vessel also called "mate" (see photo) and is drunk through a metal straw. That's practical side of the things.
Mate is a form of sharing. I saw mates passed around in buses and offices, in parks and gardens, between friends and strangers, and friends-to-be. The way N American Indians pass around a pipe (or so I was told when I was a kid).
An average tourist sees hundreds of mates for sale in Argentina. The richest collection I have found in a souvenir shop in Puerto Iguazu, and I couldn't help taking a picture... if I ever create a photo album "My Argentina" this photo will be on the cover.
Huge thanks to green who helped me to correct a picture defect (annoying flash glare, as the picture was taken against a mirror wall, and bits of the reflection of me taking picture), and to cgrindahl and fapmap who helped with advice on cropping (hence the re-post).

A wonderful photo. Many colors and shapes, and sharp too. What a wonderful puzzle this would make! Well done.

I feel fullness and tightness from this. Without a note I could only think these are souvenirs on giftshop. Good color and clarity.

I like this unusual photo! It looks like if you have cut photograph pieces then stick them one upon the other. The effect is very interesting ! And note is too !

great shot. I agree with Francis this would make a wonderful puzzle (difficult though!!)
I love mate and unfortunately I canīt agree with hellbender, it doesnīt taste better in brazil... they toast it, and they serve it extremely sweet, blended with milk, milk powder, condensed milk, sugar... nothing like a good simple bitter mate, the REAL one.
