The picture was taken on a boat tour organised on the Beagle Channel from Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego. This large guy on the hill is supposed to be a male and the group of smaller guys is his harem.
The South American Sea Lion (Otaria flavescens, formerly Otaria byronia), also called the Southern Sea Lion and the Patagonian Sea Lion, is a sea lion found on the Chilean, Peruvian, Uruguayan and Argentine coasts. Locally, it is known by several names though the most common ones are "lobo marino" (sea wolf) and "león marino" (sea lion).

Your photos are like water in a desert... the desert of TE...!
You make me green with envy for having been in the Beagle channel! I've read hundreds of books concerning this place and dreamed to go there hundreds of times... Superb mountains and fantastic seascapes, what do you want more? Here until the last century and for a good part of this one (900) it was really dangerous to sail with a small sailing boat, so many have tried and so many never came back... and you went there comfortably and safely in a tourist boat! Oh my, it's not fair!
The light and the sharpness on these rocks and sea lions is superb. Such a pleasure to see.

I do hope you have enjoyed your trip down to USHUAIA!
This picture is certainly interesting anda attractive!
Sharpness, exposure, chosen pov (from the boat, probably), dof, colors, pp, contrasts, horizontal format and composition are all excellent!
TFS - congrats,

Dziś jestesmy prawie sąsiadami, ale pokazujemy skrajnie odległe miejsca, akurat chyba przeciwległe. Ale surowy krajobraz! Fajny harem ma ten słoń morski. Fantastyczne miejsce i super zdjęcie.

Oh wow... wonderful shot of Tierra del Fuego my friend.. there's little light but enough to get some sun reflection on some of the sea lions...
The quality is absolutely superb, love the portion of the mountains on the background.. I'm so jealous, cause I have no visa to go to Argentina :-) Maybe next time
s_lush (16134) 2010-11-24 23:10
You have managed to photograph these beautiful creatures in their natural environment and against the wonderful skyline. The male on the top looks exactly like a real lion, but with flippers. Great capture. Perfectly well done!

a lucky fellow in a beautiful landscape, i must have been really interesting the boat tour with the natural beauties all around.
iainsp (2626) 2010-11-25 10:18
Welcome back home - I wonder if our paths ever crossed in your time in Argentina.
A great shot - this is a very impressive male - my experience with sealions is on Peninsula Valdez, where there mane is not normally as thick - possibly a weather issue - it is clearly far colder where you were.
I would be tempted to crop this photo top and bottom slightly - the sky is not that interesting (but the background mountains are), and perhaps crop it up a bit at the bottom for a more panoramic effect.
Great work, I am jealous that you have managed to get down to Ushuaia and beyond. Regards and thanks and welcome back, Iain

josepmarin (57947) 2010-11-25 11:57
You caught a natural very interesting scene very adapted for a documentary.
The alpha male and his "harem" they are outlined as a great protagonists in your composition, in which in addition, we can enjoy the beauty of the impressive landscape of Tierra del Fuego, in a very deep image.
A beautiful work.

La photo de ce bout du monde est trčs belle. J'aime cette population qui semble prendre un peu de repos sous la surveillance du mâle.

Hi Mariusz, your title (particularly when I saw the image) made me laugh. Amazing the places that one can find love when one loooks hard enough :) I really like these muted colours, yet they are strongly contrasted andthe textures look amazing. I don't know what aperture you used but the depth of field is wonderful, as is the sharpness especially considering you were on a boat. A brilliant shot, I look forward to seeing the rest of your ho,iday. Cheers, Lisa

A superb travell, very interetsing in a different world. A superb shot too with the these symaptic animals which give life to the seascape. Image well composed too with this FG and the prospect open to the island/mountains in the BG. Deatisl nad beautiful contrast well collected too with a not easy light.

Quite an amazing spectacle! It's a terrain which is quite astonishing even to contemplate...with the snow capepd mountains in the BG. The sun position perhaps did not favour too much, but your ND Grad helped you coax the details from the shadows. Good work!
Cafalex (924) 2010-12-06 7:22
Cloudy but light is present. You have wonderfully composed your image with the impresssive surrounding enivironment. Again its full of details andf sharp. I heard that the canon 15-85 was much better suited for heavy pixellised captors. This picture is a good example.
bartekp (4746) 2010-12-07 10:57
Pierwszy i drugi plan znakomity. Scenka jak się patrzy! Podoba mi się wykończenie w postaci gór na horyzoncie.
siolaw (38292) 2010-12-07 21:51
It must have been a fantastic trip...! With wildlife too... Even though it is almost summer there, it does't seem too sunny, but that gives the mood to the picture.
danyy (0) 2010-12-07 23:06
Une scčne sympathique et cocasse Mariusz, dans un des coins les plus désolés du monde. Une photo surprenante par la beauté du décor.
Bien ŕ toi.
Waylim (25368) 2010-12-08 15:34
Great shot, you sure mades it all the way down there. I only had two weeks and there are so much to see. For now I'll enjoy your photo. I only made it down to Punta Arenas where the penguins are. This is a great shot of the landscape as well as the colony of the sea lion, the king and it's pride. Perfect family portrait. Hm... so many wives? Animal kingdom.
nikkitta (16758) 2011-07-07 14:54
I haven't seen this photo, I also went in a boat on the Beagle
Great colors blue almost silver everywhere with the exception of the sea wolves ,how they cried!
Sense of humor with the title

What a nice family gathered, and well taken a close-ranged photo, Mariusz.
Wildlife in such close proximity can draw much exalted feel, nature's best appearence.
Well collected scene. Bravo.
