Perito Moreno is one of the glaciers which terminate in a lake (Lago Argentino). It has the advantage that at its front you can observe the process called Glacier calving. Of course, it has nothing to do with calving as in birthing a calf. It just means that large fragments of ice break away from the glacier and fall into the lake. Depending on the size of the ice fragment it may become literally an iceberg which may drift really far away from the glacier. Before a piece of ice breaks away you can quite often hear a very loud cracking or booming. That is why watching glaciers may be a spectacle not only for your eyes but also ears.
Unfortunately it is a challenge to show the process in a photo. I was lucky to watch it several times while walking around Perito Moreno. I have recorded three short movies with my camera but I cannot show movies on TE. The only way to show some sort of the movement, which I can think of, is to show a photo where the large piece of ice falls into the water causing a splash. As it is unpredictable you have to react very quickly hence the composition of this photo is not perfect. This photo was taken from a small boat during one hour trip to the southern end of the Perito Moreno.
Just to remind you, Perito Moreno front is on average 73 meters high (above the water level) and 5 km wide.

Ciekawa fotka, ciekawy moment. Dobrze widoczna struktura konca lodowca i prawie mozna wyczuc, ze za moment znowu urwie sie kawal lodu. I ten kolor lodu, az sie zimno robi.

p.s. vsako mesto je lahko lepo za tujca. za domačina, ki dnevno hodi mimo lepih stvari je včasi potrebno kar dobro pogledati okoli sebe, da opazi te lepote.

a really incredible moment it must have been great to to ear the ice clashing on the water.
i like the perfect colors and sharpness.
macjake (51374) 2011-01-10 9:31
yeah, i can certainly appreciate the difficulty in taking such a photo. not only is it hard to capture the ice falling to give a sense of the calving, but these photos of glaciers in general do not give a true sense of scale...its hard to appreciate the grand scale of the ice from a 2 dimensional small photo. but trust me, having seen icebergs and glaciers personally, i do understand this scene you've shot.
i also like the sparkling that seems to be going on along the water surface...light reflections i suppose?
have a great day

What a spendid scene. And what a timing to capture the calving in big splash like this. The glacier itself looks great as well and the mountains in the background is a perfect backdrop. TFS and have a fine week!
josepmarin (57463) 2011-01-10 12:42
finally you could receive the scene of the enormous pieces of ice that fall down on the water, with a big splashing.
The image is impressive and has a lot of graphic power, with a good dynamism.
I like these blue tonalities of the ice and its strong contrast with the dark mountains in background.
Good work, and good informative note also.

delpeoples (52289) 2011-01-11 2:01
Fantastic decisive moment, I bet you couldn;t believe your luck when the iceberg split and fell. Excellent control of the shutter, freezing the moment in time. The blue tones and textures of the iceberg are magnificent.
TFS and have a god day
jlbrthnn (79791) 2011-01-11 3:51
The color blue of these glaciers is still amazing. We guess the gigantism and the impressive spectacle of these huge ice cubes drop into the lake. Very interesting and beautiful photo. Bravo.
Have a nice day

An another very impressive view of your travel in the South of Argentino. Very impressive, very intersting and too very nice with the details and the colors well colected. Excellent contrast too between the differents elements.

wspanialy lodowiec, fajna prezentacja i informacje w notce. Niestety, coraz bardziej znikaja w morzu, klimat jednak sie ociepla a wczesna zima u nas tego faktu nie zmieni. jakosc zdjecia bdb.
sacimar (25971) 2011-01-12 7:54
other good image of the glacier, it's really impressive this place, you can't show how the piece of ice is falling down in a picture but we can imagine with it, good job,
adramad (34911) 2011-01-12 8:07
Your interesting note, explains very well the difficulty and quick reaction to capture the moment of the fall of a piece of ice.
The value of this pretty picture is not better or worse in its frame, but we can see the displacement of water by falling ice and that thanks to your image we can enjoy it and try to imagine how exciting it will be "in situ ".
Beautiful glacier blue tone and sharpness that allows us to see their sharp escarpments.
bartekp (4746) 2011-01-13 12:36
Świetnie że udało się uchwycić moment odpadania lodu. Kolor i ostrość samego lodu fantastyczna.
ciakgiak (30403) 2011-01-14 14:58
immagine capolavoro! hai catturato un paesaggio mozzafiato in cui c'č l'aggiunta della caduta dei ghiacci. La qualitŕ č come sempre stupefacente.
Un carissimo abbraccio
Angshu (54497) 2011-01-15 5:54
I never knew about this process, forget about seeing a picture of it. While the picture shows only a fraction of a second of the entire process, it must have been quite a spectacle to view with own eyes. Thanks to you at least we are able to see that moment. The jagged teeth like top & the contrast with the dark BG brings it out!
Waylim (24954) 2011-01-20 22:11
Looks like your also have great weather here, I like how the light give that glow to the blue glacier and it is a wonderful moment as it cracks and fell into the lake. Great catch.
