We had a quite rainy weekend in North East England. It was an opportunity to have a look into archival photos again. This picture was taken on the road to Argentina’s Trekking Capital, El Chalten.
El Chaltén is a small mountain village in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. It is located in the riverside of Río de las Vueltas, within the Los Glaciares National Park (section Reserva Nacional Zona Viedma) at the base of Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy mountains, both popular for climbing. For this reason this village was named Argentina's Trekking Capital or Capital Nacional del Trekking.
I have driven this road in the afternoon when the mountain panorama was covered in shade. Next day we took a hike to the foothills of Cerro Torre which was a nice and easy walk but with plenty of stops it took us most of the day (click here to see my photo of Cerro Torre). We left next day before the noon but the weather got worse and the panorama did not look good anymore so I never really had a chance to photograph it in good light conditions. I am not a big fan of black and white photos but the colors were quite washed out here so I decided to de-saturate it completely. It may be not the best quality but it has a great sentimental value for me.
In this panorama you can spot two very characteristic peaks. The highest is Cerro Fitz Roy and one slightly left off the centre, probably the steepest needle is Cerro Torre. Cerro Torre was featured in the 1991 film Scream of Stone, directed by Werner Herzog.

very nice the B/W format, with the road to adds depth and perspectve in the scene,as lead-in the eye on the backdrop Mts.I like the excellent light and colour management as the beaty of the scene.

Dobra mocna kompozycja, widać że z pasją ją wykonałeś.
Podoba mi się kolorystyka. Linie odrazu przerzucają wzrok na tło z górami a tam piękna gra światła i cienia.

Black & white worked perfectly here, as management of light, level of sharpness, dof, chosen pov and symmetrical composition are other excellent photo qualities as well!
Yes, a wonderful picture indeed!
A region I still have to visit some day!
TFS - congrats,

This is a beautiful black and white, and those jagged peaks do say adventure. The road leads into the scene beautifully and also leads into the sense of excitement of what lies ahead when the road meets the mountains. Its a brilliant combination of the everyday, with the road and the magical with the mountains which look like something from an epic fantasy movie. I can imagine that being the home of many monsters.

an amazing road shot this and one that works so effectively in B&W. The scenery is just so dramatic and the perspective here irresistible. A real wonder! Love it!
Regards - Brian.

Great work! Probably very wise to do it in B&W. The grey weather turns this into a more interesting image, than one with sharp contrasts from a sunny day. Much more emotional.

J'aime beaucoup cette composition qui ressemble à la dernière image d'un film du genre road movie. Le noir et blanc est bien choisi surtout au niveau des montagnes en arrière plan.
ikeharel (44321) 2013-10-15 5:18
fantastic effect with the B&W shot over the known nature's resrve.
The sight of the needles shaped tops are overwhelming.
I assume light condition made you to decide of a pic. in B&W, yet achieved wonderful clear view and with excelent DOF along the road.

Hello Mariusz,I must admit that I am a great believer of BW when implemented correctly and your mono conversion works very well for me in this scene, not only because of the jagged shapes of the mountains and the endless road leading to them, but also because of the overall top class composition and balance of the image.
The little wisp of cloud is important in the sky and the pleasant under stated tones perfect for the location.
I might just have cropped a tiny bit off the bottom of the image so that the edge of the road emerged directly from the vertical corners but that is such a tiny thing and may not be to your taste.
It`s a very dramatic,beautiful landscape expertly portrayed.
Kindest regards Les.

So back to Argentina
What a pity your bad luck with the time
Anyway you manage to present an impressive landscape, a so long and right route going and going and the mountains as a backdrop
Very informative note, I am learning about Argentina with them
Well done, B/W works great here

complimenti per questo bianco e nero eccellente sia nella composizione che per la scelta del soggetto.
Una ripresa molto ben eseguita alla quale non manca nitidezza ed una bella scala di grigi.
Ciao e buona serata

This is too good.Never seen any road vanishing into the snowy mountains.I wish if you could show this in colors.Superb presentation, very sharp shot with an excellent light and POV. TFS.
josepmarin (56581) 2013-10-16 3:39
the great depth of the image and the dynamic perspective of the road they are the real eye-catchers of your composition, and in addition our look goes far towards the gorgeous mountains in background.
The Cerro Torre and Fitzroy they can be the most beautiful mountains in the world.
The B&W gives a nice dramatic elegance to the ensemble.
A superb work.

You chose a wonderful angle this creates a lot depth and perspective.
When we white line follow, come very far against the mountains
Very good layout and light management.
Excellent composition, lovely presentation too, TFS.

This dead central compo - rules are made to be broken sometime- is about perspective and depth you have achieved in wonderful layers of tones, light and contrast under the expansive sky with very a pleasing results making this mono effect work. The strong converging diagonals pulls all the attention deeep deeep in and wander into the breath taking backdrop. A nicely done with more satisfying results and tks for sharing.

wspanialy widok ale nasuwa sie pytanie- dlaczego bez koloru? Podba mi sie symetria i perspektywa drogi, ktora wciaga w te odlegle gory. Pozazdroscic takiej podrozy!

Wow! co za precyzja tak wspanialej kompozycji. Siwtny punkt widZenia ktory pozwolic Ci wyknac tak wspaniale zdjecie. Fantastyczne perspektywa no i te niesamowite gory ktorych szczyty przycjagaja uwage. Podoba mi sie take wybor koloru B&W do tego zdjecia. Przepiekna praca. Moje gratulacje.
Serdecznie pozdrawiam i zycze milego dnia, Barbara

I am not sure about the B&W choice, but the composition is excellent anyway, with the perspective lines of the road starting at the bottom corners that add some depth to the composition and drive our look to the impressive mountains. I love it !
PaulVDV (17485) 2013-10-16 14:06
What an extraordinary and breathtaking landscape! A sight to stay standing astonished in the middle of the road :)
Excellent capture of this wonderful landscape where the road and the surrounding plain seem to continue infinitely far unto the abrupt wall of the steep mountains that suddenly pop up.
The sharp peaks remind me a bit of the Dolomites.
Best regards, Paul

A classical view of a road and perfectly captured! The mountains in the background are wonderful and give very good depth to the image! Beautiful composition! Excellent job!
adramad (31151) 2013-10-17 7:14
Superb perspective of this beautiful composition, impressive as the road leads the eye towards the long distance has a backdrop of the stunning mountains that create their rocky pinnacles and snow splashing all guards.
In this image the B & W, looks good.
Very good image quality, sharpness is also great.
Enjoy a happy day.

You are one of the few lucky people I know that get to see both Fits Roy and Cerro Torre. Needless to say in the same POV. I have seen Fits Roy for 1/2 and hour and Cerro Torre with some cloud, almost full view but better than some. Anyway, great shot here, I think the B&W work fine here, but the color version might be more impressive for this shot. Regardless, it is still fantastic.
CLODO (26616) 2013-10-20 0:14
What a big contrast between the straight road which leads the look on the peaks at the background, a symetric shot well seen and taken.
adores (30975) 2013-10-24 17:11
An amazing view for sure! Your pov is excellent - I really like this empty road leading us straight to the mountains in background. Really good in b&w! A very good shot!
delpeoples (48886) 2013-11-21 2:32
I don't often see B&W in your Gallery and after seeing this one, would love to see more. That landscape is breath-taking and I think you were being very brave and artistic choosing the monochrome. Wow, just look at the height and shape of those mountains, you couldn't dream them up, they're perfect. And the converging lines lead the eye directly towards them. I love this effect, which accentuates the absolute wilderness and unspoilt nature of this place. Superb.
Thanks for sharing
willperrett (4187) 2013-12-16 3:24
How did I miss this one? You probably know my predeliction for monochrome, and this is an absolute cracker! It almost looks like 2 photographs in one: the mountain scenery pasted above an image of a savannah scene. Not that I really believe you'd stoop so low! Absolutely gorgeous.
