Rain, World Cup Match
Time: 15 hours, taken during the last part of the match played between Argentina and Belgium
Photo taken at 9 de julio avenue that runs conecting North to South
It was raining hard, so only three persons can be seen , they are polices wearing green waistcoat, at the far left is the biggest photo of Messi, it runs along a block, more than 100 meters
As Jerusalem has mills (Ike´s post), Buenos Aires has an obelisk, not from Egypt but built in Buenos Aires in 1936 and considered an icon of the city
It’s located in 9 de Julio Avenue, which Argentinians call “the wide avenue of the world”, there is also “the longest street of the world” showing that way the character of the majority of Argentinians, exaggerating unchecked facts and so being hated by all countries from America

Te rain has given you two gifts on this photo, the so rare empty streets and also the fine reflections of the light which splashes color all across your picture. The obelisk is a fascinating structure, and like you say, not one I would expect to see here. It towers beautifully in your image and is a prefect focal point. It pierces the grey sky majestically too.
Thanks as always

Yes, at that moment the streets in Belgium were empty too. But only disappointment followed the end of the match here.
July doesn't have the nicest weather in Buenos Aires but the wet avenue and sidewalk provided long and colourful reflections of the lights.
Best regards, Paul

Obviously timing is everything and capturing your huge street almost vacated is evidence. The large obelisk dominates the wide rain soaked street, and the well lit Coke commercial on the left.
Thanks for sharing,

La pluie agrémente l'avant plan
Bon cadrage en perspective
Il est possible de rendre le ciel plus dramatique, mais cela ne donne pas un bon résultat, je ne fais pas de WS

Hello Maria, Haha, it is raining and all the people are sitting watching TV, so the streets look like deserted. probably very rare moment like this in the busy city. Nice photo with the special mood. Nice reflections in the wet pavement.

Your title is most apt!
For a city, it does look empty.
I particularly like the red reflections on the wet road and pavements. They tells a lot about the conditions. They also give a great strength to the composition; the reflections downwards verticals, the obelisk an upward vertical, with the street line being the compositional separating line.
Have a great day,

The wet pavement provided for better reflections, this is technique used by movie directors especially night scenes. Nice capture with good pov and nice details. Well done, tfs.

Red lights reflection on the wet road beautifully decorated the picture, which shows a magnificent Obelisk, prominently above the boulevard.
Fine view in depth, many buildings details shown in good clarity.
superbly taken shot.
*** ready for tonight game, 23:00 on out time.

Again very attractive reflections in the wet streets. The red lines are fantastic. I like the inclusion of a few persons crossing the street. The obelisk may be an icon of the city, and it would normally catch most of the attention of this view, but this time I notice the wet street more.

Woo-hoo, they made it to the final...big congratulations to "La Albiceleste!" My patience of writing a comment has paid off! :)) O.K., I will say no more about it until Sunday. ;)
Now, where do does Argentina have the nerve to steal the Washington Monument and claim it as their own? jaja Or perhaps this was stolen from Place de la Concorde in Paris, non? ha
Another fine, rainy day shot of this "widest avenue of the world." Not only are there a few police this moment, but even a couple of cars...what are these people thinking, they should be inside watching the match! This really is a fine boulevard and a wonderfully long, converging perspective in this composition. The sky may have been dull, but the red lights and electronic billboard excite the streets in reflection while the obelisk is a superb centerpiece.
Rainy happiness abounds! ) Have a wonderful evening mi amiga. Take good care.
Cheers from sun filled Phoenix,

Hola mon amie Maria :-)

Buen trabajo. Me gusta
Disfruta de un buen fin de semana.
Saludos muy cordiales.

I remember this obelisk, I walked pass it a few times during my stay here. The hotel I stay in was within walking distance. I like the reflection on the street from the rain, Just like the first day I was there it rain so heavy, I still enjoy it and I was at the La Boca. I even watch the boys playing soccer in the rain there. I posted a picture of it awhile back. anyway, brings back nice memories.
Congratulations for advancing to the final. Go Argentina. May watch the game tomorrow I think.

Wonderful photographic awareness and full marks for being out there with your camera. indeed it's almost deserted street scene on a wet day but you have given the place a beauty all of it's own with that rain. The amazing splashes of red against the greys just lifting the image ten folds with the wonderful architecture as a backdrop. This sums up the street condition precisely, beautifully observed and captured, tfs.

Looks similar to the Washington DC monument in the USA! I like the symmetrical reflections in the wet street and the diffused lighting. Good sharpness and a well composed image. The repetition of the red vertical streaks adds interest. Tfs!

Hola Maria querida,
as I've already told you, we, in Greece, know Argentina for its music, football, football players who have played in our teams, film directors and financial and political history. Many scenes from Buenos Aires remind me of Athens and I don't mind the exaggerations at all, I don't take them seriously anyway. I like this wintry scenery very much. The obelisk may be a city landmark but it's the textures, colours, scarce traffic and melancholic atmosphere that I like the most. The red reflections play a very attractive role in this picture too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,
mkamionka (29151) 2014-07-16 5:44
it is often the case the people call something the best or the biggest etc and it appears to be not true, later they often add a phrase to correct it. I like the fact that contrary to other big cities you did not steal the obelisk from Egypt :)
Very attractive presentation with the rain and some reflections in the wet road. It enhances the atmosphere. Having the poster of the player adds a nice context fixing the time when the photo was taken. I guess this must have been a very safe time to walk around as everyone was in front of TV unless all the police was watching the game as well.
I guess you are not into football then :) me neither.
Very well done,
