Photographer's Note

I was going to call this image My Melbourne, but I haven't that much affection for my adopted city and I seldom visit the city itself, preferring to live in the leafy (and fire prone) suburb in the Dandenong Ranges.Still, on this day as I walked around with my camera, I was looking at the city as a tourist would and I liked what I saw around the Federation Square. Obviously so did this young couple.

Eating al fresco has become popular in Melbourne thanks to the postwar influx of Mediterranean people. Around the perimeter of the square are a number of cafes and restaurants. To the right is the grand Flinders Street railway station which according to the latest news I read, is crumbling into neglect. You cannot see the Yarra River but it does flow past the station.
The weather wasn't the best- a thin film of cloud provided the sort of glare that gave everything an even wash.
