Victoria has been facing days of danger and devastation as about seventy grass fires and forest fires burned in the countryside and national parks. Only today a cool change has arrived and many of the fires are being controlled.
For the last three days Melbourne was under a thick cover of smoke and the sun looked like a red balloon in the late hours of the day.Yesterday the smoke reached even the Dandenong hills which are to the south-east of Melbourne, yet the largest fires were north of the city.
In the photo you can see the smoky sky and the haze from the fires that hit country Victoria.
The fires were hundreds of kilometres from the township of Ballan, but the smoke was everywhere as fires destroyed distant homesteads, killed livestock and caused towns to be evacuated.
You can see how dry the countryside is as we haven't had rain for weeks and the days have been very hot, the wind dry and scorching at times.

That is a great photo of a quintessential Australian scene. Hanging out the washing in a dry rural area, bushfire haze in the background, breeze in the hair and wearing not much more than a nightie and work boots. Photo is well balanced with nice colours.

Excellent candid image. I like the composition, with the line of washing drawing our eyes to the girl (as if they needed drawing!) On the other side of the globe, we're experiencing the other side of the weather, with extensive flooding, hurricane force winds, and the wettest January since records began...

Une scène bien composée, le geste avec la cigarette est parfaitement exécuté.
Le linge forme une diagonale intéressante, et crée des éléments de couleurs bienvenus.

Hello Klaudio - A super composition and an excellently timed shot. I love the atmosphere you captured here; there is s a feeling of freedom created by the wind in the girl's hair or the combination of boots and skimpy clothes. A top shot and one I like a lot. Warm regards Rosemary

This is an extraordinary photo, making me think of a painting much rather than a view out of real life. I am astonished by the posture of the woman as she extinguishes her cigarette, her blonde (or ginger) hair blowing in the wind, her light dress and heavy boots, her way of using her left arm to keep the balance, the colourful laundry hanging on a diagonal, the dry grass and the hazy sky. If I had seen this in a museum I would have stopped in front of it for a long time, discovering more and more details, just as I am doing here now. Of course I don't remember all of your earlier photos, but this has to be among your very best. My congratulations.

And here in France and GB, we have rain storms for 2 months!
I like the way she light off her cigarette in order not to put fire in the yellow grass, and take her dry socks back home.

I really like this composition, looks so dynamic with the wet socks and pants that hang on the diagonal clothesline and the posture of the girl that gives the pic a good movement. The varied colours of the clothes make a nice contrast to the grey hazy sky and green plant background. A good shot to keep us informed about the current climate situation in this part of the world. Well done.

This image gets extra strength of your note. That landscape certainly looks dry and prone to catch fire. And this is perfectly timed too. Those boots looks funnily out of the place on dry and hot looking weather.

Perfectly timed to create an interesting photo. I like the way the woman's hair is moved by the wind, the colourful washing and yellow grass.
Have a nice weekend

We see almost every week images on TV about the big forest burn in your country, these young lady is a little bit cautious with the cigarette.
About the was hanging shall I not speak, she must yet a lot learn!
Of course a wonderful nature and nice young lady picture.
Excellent presentation, colour and sharpness are perfect.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice weekend,

Excellent snapshot in very good light. I like the arrangement in portrait format. All in superb light and colors.
Thanks for informative note. It reminds me on the great bush fires in Yarra Valley early February 2009, when I narrowly escaped without being hurt.
Very well done.

this picture is fascinating in its simplicity, immediacy and impact. An ordinary daily life scene in which the light, colours, textures and scenery describe the weather conditions so effectively, your picture for me is iconic. Apart from the excellent description, the lady is a very interesting protagonist, a comprehensible and charming character. I like very much how the line with clothes stops at her and how past her we have a wide view of the heat suffering landscape. I hope things will get better soon. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely week,
annjackman (16507) 2014-02-16 9:18
I hope the cooler weather remains for you as it is so sad to hear of the devastating fires. England has the opposite with extensive flooding. This picture is first class. The subject matter is unusual and beautifully caught. The woman is acting so naturally and the line of clothes forms a connection through the image. Fabulous colours against the hazy BG. This has to go into my favourites.
Kind Regards, Ann

Well, what can I say, this is really a masterpiece, with the right moment, with the narration of typical daily life in Victoria, telling us many things about the habits, climate, clothing style, the sun, the land and so on and on besides the beautiful lady It really has a very strong story Klaudio, congratulations.
jcpix (8380) 2014-02-16 15:53
I'm much too familiar with the dry conditions, we haven't had rain in Phoenix for months now...and there are many fears the place is going to go up like a tinder box at the first storm to bring lightning strikes. A topical shot, and one that is certainly relatable. A conscious and wise decision by this young lady to make sure it's put out before starting another blaze in the dry landscape. Well timed to catch the action of this daily life moment, seemingly routine in nature, gathering up the air dried laundry...but informative and well detailed with precision. Enjoy the week ahead.

Many years ago the German magazine Stern had a special page with "selfexplanatory" pictures. This one wold fit perfectly to that page !

Truly unique and spectacular photo, with an amazing mood that somehow evokes the work of American painters Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper, mixed together...
If I would have done this image, I would consider myself a very good photograph.
Ninello52 (7265) 2014-02-25 11:12
I really like the setting! It looks like the scene of an American film 70/80 years! Bella, her blonde in a yellow field, with a row of hanging socks! Very beautiful!
Kaisa71 (208) 2014-03-04 0:48
Interesting photo and note too. I first thought the air is a bit misty due to high temperature but I see the situation is much worse. A friend of mine is living close to Melbourne and she always tells about these awful annual fires. Stay safe there! The photo is simple but I like it a lot. A woman is focused on her boots, and how many socks she has washed!! Only socks? The wind is blowing her hair beautifully. Nature really looks dry but the larch (correct word?) on the right brings some natural green color. Hopefully you already got some rain.....

Very good scene! The pose is fantastic and you got a very good composition. The way the woman is dressing, the line of clothes drying. Perfect moment and you captured very well the haze from the fires. We have the same problem here every summer.
