Photographer's Note

One of the highlights of my South Pacific Trip in March 2010 was the island state of Vanuatu (Micronesia), famous for some of the most active volcanoes in the world. One of them, roaring Mount Yasur, is located on the remote island of Tanna, a one hour flight from Port Vila (Efate).
There you can walk up to the crater rim (if the level of activity is below 3) and watch one of the most impressive spectacle of nature. Every 5-10 minutes the lava explodes with a deafening noise just in front of your eyes. The eruptions have a height of up to 100 meters, followed by a giant pyroclastic cloud.
Definitely a once in a lifetime experience!
