Photographer’s Note

A shot of the impromptu markets that surround the boat we were staying on while travelling through the islands to dive. The locals bring their goods to the boat by canoe. I was just trying to get a shot with the variety of fruit and vegetables grown and sold by the locals.

Hi, Hilari -

I like several of the photos you've posted here, but I wanted to comment on this one because you said you wanted feedback. I think you had a good idea here, but you're trying to capture too much at once, so the image comes out too busy. You also have several exactly horizontal lines, which has the effect of dividing the picture rather than unifying it. The bamboo poles, being on a slant and going through all of the parts, might have had a unifying effect, but the horizontals were too much to overcome. The plastic basket in front is also out of place, both because of its modernity and because the color is jarring. The yellow basket in back doesn't do this because it doesn't call attention to itself.

A much better shot, I think, would have been to center on the boy and the woman, and let a few produce items show. Since horizontal lines dominate, a horizontal picture would probably also work better here, perhaps with the bamboo slanting on one side.
