Samoan girl grating coconut for the cream to be used in the Sunday meal. Olympus Infinity P&S, Scanned Slide.
Former Western Samoa, Tufui'opa, Apia.
repost - Rotated to level the horizon and removed some noise from original scan. Decided not to crop. |

You sure get around. I do like the glimpse of Samoan life, it has your usual facility for capturing an informal moment (Touristdidi has the same gift - one that I personally lack). Not sure that slide film was quite right for the conditions - print film would have given you more latitude with contrast and hence less blown-out sections. But a nice photo.

I like the portrait framing, creating a vast space above the lady. I think, decreasing the highlights while increasing the contrast a bit more would enhance the photo further. Great to see such a candid smile!
Hi Robin,
I never went to Samoa, but having seen this photo, would love to go one day... I can imagine all sorts of smells and noise, this photo really speaks to me as I saw similar scenes in Asia (of course, the faces and the clothes are not the same).
Thanks to have made me dream...
TFS,
Cath.
