Continuing my 1970s Papua new Guinea series.
Matupit is one of the volcanoes that ring the old town of Rabaul and which erupt periodically causing massive devastation. I climbed the volcano and down into the crater with this local boy who didn't seem to notice the heat of the rocks - I could feel the heat through my shoes. He is holding a lump of yellow and smelly sulphur. You can see patches of sulphur on the ground. Clouds of sulphur fumes were all around us (probably not too good for people's health!)
The general rock colour was blue/grey adding to the strange atmosphere in the crater.
