Photographer’s Note

This photo was taken while visiting a friend who works with missionaries. We flew to the missionary outpost at May River in the central Sepik basin. On day 2 after a 2 hour boat ride we arrived at this village where I was lucky enough to take this photograph. Such a remarkable bond this mother and child have.

The Sepik river and basin originates in the Western mountains. It is very isolated with few roads, on the perimeters, and accessible primarily by air or water. Although somewhat hazardous the location more than compensates for this by it sheer beauty and abundance of tropical birds, insects, butterflies and village life.

Note: I'd like to thank those who have commented on this photo. I'm still figuring out how to post a good photo (size and Pixels) and still meet trek's requirements. This was cropped from a larger photo (about 40% of the original) mostly to remove the date stamp. I've yet to find a company that digitizes color negatives where the clarity of film is preserved.
