Photographer's Note

On our way to South East Asia, we stopped briefly in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. It was in 2006.

We were lucky to arrive for the country celebration; Independence Day.

At the marina, we enjoyed cultural dances and local art displays.
It allowed us to have a glimpse at the rich aboriginal culture of this large island.
The second largest in the world, shared with Indonesia.

Even at the nearby supermarket, employees participated in the celebrations by coming at work in colourful traditional costumes.
It was quite a sight and they all cooperated with smiles as I took many photographs.

Port Moresby is a modern city and at any other time of year, I would have missed this photographic opportunity.
This young girl probably goes to school, dressed as any modern kid we see in our own country.

So if you plan to visit Papua New Guinea, I recommend you synchronize your trip for Independence Day on September 16

Note: This is the second time I post this picture. The first time, it looked very “flat” and was not as my original copy, so I decided to make some adjustments.
