Today, 25 April, is Anzac Day - the day Australians and New Zealanders remember those who made the supreme sacrifice.
As Bomana War Cemetery in Papua New Guinea does not appear elsewhere in TE I thought today would be an appropriate day to upload this photo.
Bomana War Cemetery is in the outskirts of Port Moresby and here lie the remains of 3819 soldiers - 702 are unidentified. Those who died fighting in Papua and Bougainville are buried here. This cemetery is also the resting place for 438 British Royal Artillerymen who were prisioners of the Japanese from Singapore and who died in captivity in the Solomon Islands.
On Anzac Day a dawn service is held at Bomana and it attracts a huge crowd.
They shall grow not old,
As we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun,
And in the morning
We will remember them.
In workshops I am including a photo of Bomana as I saw it from the air flying back from Kokoda and another showing a close-up of the white marble headstone of an unidentified soldier.

It's very interesting to see this large cemetery in PNG. The DOF in this photo really shows how many rows of headstones there are, and I like the way the graves in the foreground are shaded by the trees. I am also impressed with the aerial view in one of the workshops.

I can not say, that i like a cemeteris, but this is very impressive photo. Fine colours, right lines, excellent perspective. TFS!

last year I happened to know that April 25th is also a very important day in Oz and NZ.
April 25th is Freedom Day in Italy and stands for the end of II WW in our country
so...a day for tragic memories and remembrance

Hi Marlene, I hope you don;t think I'm stalking you on the New Guinea theme! I saw this shot this morning but had to run out the door before I got the chance to comment. The sheer magnitude of those graves saddens me deeply. And on this special day, your photo is beautifully appropriate. Best regards, Lisa.

A sensitive tribute, Marlene. The aerial in WS shows how the grass here is kept green though all around is arid.

very impressive photo! especially the aerial view (in the WS)! Taken together, all the three photos give a clear picture of this place.
I am amazed at the geometrical patterns in this shot! Really great POV.
Very best wishes,

A beautifully composed scene and a lovely remembrance. You chose an excellent POV and framed the picture well. I like the lines created by the headstones. The view of the mountains in the background is stunning with good DOF. Very nice work.

some lines shows us some vanishing points in one composition, it is great.
those white is shining in surrounding splendid view of mountains and trees,
memories are never forgotten in this peaceful land.

Now this one brings back memories Marlene,
For a few months I lived in a block of flats right next door and as I was with the army then got to a couple of dawn services there. A beautiful and peaceful place. Conditions are often hard in PNG for good photos but you've won out on this one.

Excellent composition and colors. The tombs form a great picture and the tree is a good frame. Congratulations!
