Photographer’s Note
I had planned to stay in Rabaul but as a result of heavy rain and flooding I had to stay at a seaside resort opposite Rabaul. Rabaul is actually just out of the picture on the right.
It had been 20 years since I had last been in the area exploring the islands to the east of New Ireland for gold. It was sad to think I was one of the last of the team left.
Work this time took me to a survey ship in the Bismarck Sea search for gold on the bottom of the ocean. The luxury of on ship accommodation and food. I remember living in a tent and the continual scratching from leeches and mosquitoes bites, and the malaria. Living off dry biscuits and tinned food. And one night rats got into my tent and ate my old rubber boots but left the biscuits untouched.
Back to the photo. A storm can be seen approaching and the road closure continued forcing me to stay another day at the resort. The boy is hunting for lunch.

Hello Malcolm
An interesting composition showing daily life in a part of the world which is not well represented on TE. This is in fact only the 76th photo to be posted from PNG. Thank you, Marlene

Hello Malcolm,
More than twenty years ago I had a dream of going to PNG, including Rabaul, but for various reasons (the high cost being one of them) I didn't go. This picture is a bit of a compensation, nicely composed and with very good colours.
Best regards,
Gert
