Another photo from 1971 in Papua New Guinea. This one is of a typical local market. The sign translates as " Hear this. Men and women are not to chew betel nut and spit in the market area. If you get caught you could go to court" And the piles for sale in front of the sign - why betel nut, of course.
Notice the woman carrying what are called bilum bags (with coloured stripes) in the middle of the right hand side. These bags carried heavy loads but were always carried by the women. The straps went around the front of their heads sometimes, after time, resulted in a grove across their foreheads.
Goroka was one of the 2 biggest towns in the PNG highlands.
We lived in Port Moresby where you couldn't get much in the way of fresh vegetables so if you went to the highlands (flying was the only way to get there) you'd take plenty of empty bags to stock up with fresh supplies at the Goroka market.

Beautiful stuff from a part of the world that is really not that represented over here. Excellent quality for a scan, colors - the situation itself and everything else. You must have had a blast in PNG way back in the 70`s.
