Photographer’s Note
This is the second in my mini-series of photos from when I lived in Papua New Guinea in the early 70s.
A group of us rented an old cargoes DC3 to fly to Rabaul for the weekend. Rabaul then was a beautiful South Pacific town but was levelled by volcanic eruptions in 1994. Whilst we were there we went out to Matupit village from where we went in very low sitting outrigger canoes across to Matupit volcano. The photo shows the canoe that we travelled in being carried up the black volcanic beach after the trip.
Once you landed the water and the sand under it were very hot from the heat of the volcano which, fortunately, at that time was relatively quiet. We climbed the volcano and then some us ventured into the crater with its heavy smell of sulphur.
The photo was scanned from a 1/2 frame slide which shows a little in the speckled sky.

On voit la photo scannée mais elle est comme un reportage.Un moment de vie dans les années 70
Se servent-ils toujours de ces bateaux ? ou bien ont ils opté pour des moteurs ?

Hello Ian
Considering this is a scan of a half frame there is a lot of detail to be seen. OK the sky and part of one outrigger boat are a bit overexposed - but the rest of the image appears well preserved considering it is 36 years old. Your story tells of an adventure. I have also posted some images of PNG - from more recent times. Tfs, Marlene
