Photographer’s Note
All right, here we go. After long and interesting journey we finally got to Stewart Island. This is very last piece of land on the way to Antarctica. Despite the island is pretty big (something about 1800 square kilometres) it is barely populated. Only 450 people live there permanently. To get there was quite a task. After long road you need to catch a ferry which lives Bluff three times a day. A bit of advice there – you better book that trip well in advance, because ferry isn’t very big and in a summer time it could be a problem.
The island itself is just amazing. It is really unspoiled and pure part of our world. Almost entire Island is national park, youngest in New Zealand. This is a paradise for wild life like seals, penguins, fish, and birds. We saw an albatross the king of Southern Sea, and many others. Biggest population of kiwi lives on Stewart Island. They say the total number goes up to 20 000, pretty impressive, isn’t it (but to be honest I have no idea how they got that number)? In a good day the water looks just unbelievable. It’s so clean you can see for few meters deep. However, the weather like that is not very often event on the island. Usually weather is pretty rough and winds are strong, but why complain? This is the end of the land, this is Southern ocean.

Hi Dimitri,
You're right, the water is amazingly clear, and allows the underwater rocks to provide a different colour to the sea area, along with the different tones of blue. I really like your composition which emphasises the total natural look of the island. Very well done.
Cheers Grant

Hi Dmitri
This place looks so pretty and you were really lucky with the weather. The colour and transparency of the water is stunning and the vertical format works really well.

Dmitri,
This looks like a very beautiful and pristine place. You are luck to be there.
Your composition is fine using the vertical format to show the shore and crystal clear water. The lighting and colors are great as is the sharpness and DOF.

Hi Dmitri,
I'll say it again; you produce some of the very best New Zealand photos on Trek Earth. This looks like Abel Tasman National Park in a lot of ways, but I could imagine a lot less visited. I have read much about Steward Island, particularly its status as an ecological 'ark' of wildlife. As you say, they weather is remarkable and it is not often like this in the Southern Ocean. The colours are rich and realistic, the RAW clarity is perfect and the fame and title exquisite. Perfect job, one of my favorites!

Hello Dmitri,
Indeed a beautiful island. The colours of the water and surrounding trees look great. Your perspective is also very effective because it show us a nice vertical view that includes several elements of the island. Light and colours look very attractive. A peaceful place and perfect for a vacation I think. Thanks.
