Photographer’s Note

Lake Tekapo is largest of three roughly parallel lakes running north-south along the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin in the South Island of New Zealand (the others are Lake Pukaki and Lake Ohau). It covers an area of 83 km², and is at an altitude of 700 metres above sea level.

The lake is fed at its northern end by the braided Godley River, which has its source in the Southern Alps, to the north.

The lake is a popular tourist destination, and several resort hotels are located at the township of Lake Tekapo at the lake's southern end.

An astronomical observatory is located at Mount John, which is to the north of the town, and south of the small Lake Alexandrina.

Hello Renier,

Wow, an absolute stunner. I may even go as far as saying that this is your best image thus far! It is incredible - the polarizer has done wonders to the scene! The large rock in the FG is a good lead-in to the photo, drawing the eye across the lake. On both my visits here it has been very overcast. I remember stopping at the famous church overlooking Tekapo while it was raining :(. Looks like the distant peaks have had a good dusting of snow. I am very impressed with this one; it pleasantly highlights the natural beauty of this incredible place.

This is a great composition of a great mountain scene. Your low POV is great making the rocks in the foreground seem as large a the mountains in the back. The reflection is great adding depth and balance to the shot. The clarity of the water allowing us to see the stones on the bottom through the reflection gives us a 3-D look. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and DOF.

Hi Renier,
This is a great view over the lake and you got some beautiful clouds in the sky again too. I also like the many blue tones of the sky, particularly the dark blue in the upper right hand corner. The calm water provides a wonderful peaceful atmosphere and nice reflections. The inclusion of the rock in the foreground was a good idea as well.

The Reflection is totally of the blue and white sky absent of and distortion from the pure water of this magnificent mountain lake. I have to see this with my own eyes, it looks fantastic with those snowpeak mountains and their reflection in the lake. New Zealand must be beautiful...for sure i'll go..!!!

Beautifully composed - a stunner! Making the sky be the bulk of the image works very well. The only part that troubles me is the bit of over-polarized sky in the upper right corner. But other than cropping - which you don't want to do here - I'm not sure what can be done about it.

The dynamics of the sky work very well in this image a it create a nice contrast against the equally dramatic background. This is a wide view and the mountains seem very far away, specially with the massive rock taking such a strong focal point on the foreground. Good colouration and sharpness. Thanks.

This is early summer, and I notice the snowcapped summits in the back, contrasting so well the blue sky!
