Franz Josef Glacier

Hello everybody!
Another photo from New Zeland this time from the very bottom of Franz Joseph Glacier.
It takes about 30minutes to get here from the carpark. It's absolutely breathtaking. You can observe the real power of moving ice with naked eye... though the sound of cracking and bursting ice is a bit scary:)))
Now few facts and information from wikipedia.org
Growth and retreat
The glacier is currently 12 km long and terminates 19 km from the Tasman Sea. It exhibits a cyclic pattern of advance and retreat, driven by differences between the volume of meltwater at the foot of the glacier and volume of snowfall feeding the névé.
Having retreated several kilometres between the 1940s and 1980s, the glacier entered an advancing phase in 1984 and at times has advanced at the phenomenal (by glacial standards) rate of 70 cm a day. The flow rate is about 10 times that of typical glaciers. Over the longer term, the glacier has retreated since the last ice age, and it is believed that it extended into the sea some 10,000 to 15,000 years ago.
This cyclic behaviour is well illustrated by a postage stamp issued in 1946, depicting the view from St James Anglican Church. The church was built in 1931, with a panoramic altar window to take advantage of its location. By 1954, the glacier had disappeared from view from the church, but it reappeared in 1997.

I remember that place, viktor. You are absolutely right and: you were capable of getting this impressions on the photo. I can hear the cracking! Good job mate!

Joachim
Very impressive view of the glacier, your image almost makes me feel the cold weather. Another that grasps my attention here is the natural desaturation of the color. It adds a nostalgic touch to the image.
Great capture,
Cheers,
Enrique
Viktor, it has been a while since I looked into your collection and I see now that I was missing a lot of outstanding work. This composition is quite fantastic and I can appreciate it a lot after done several hikes on top of some glaciers. The sound of a glacier is certainly something very scary! I like this shot with the impression of looking into the glaciers mouth, but I would love to see your interpretation of the post stamp composition with the panormaic altar window. That is, if you have done it.
Regards, Peter

Hi Viktor,
that place is beautiful and so interesting! I like very much the colour of the ice and I really can imagine the power and the sound of the water. The exposure is very good as well as the point of the view.
Best regards,
Athanasios.
