We Took our Visitors to PIHA

My husband and I have been entertaining Sabrina / Sign and Martin, / Speed34121 from Germany for a few days this week before they flew back home yesterday. They’ve been touring New Zealand for 4 weeks, the second time they’ve been out here together.

On Wednesday I took them to the Waitakeries Ranges and Piha Beach on Auckland’s West Coast. I think Sabrina and Martin were quite impressed with the area, and I did have fun taking them around and showing them some of our special places we like to visit.

Piha is a very rough beach, well known for its overwhelming surf. It is situated on the west coast of the North Island – a coastal community nestled between the rugged forested Waitakere Ranges and a black sand beach notorious for its wild weather and large surf.

Every summer thousands of people come to the beach for a day or spend the holidays camping or baching. The community is a mix of bach owners who visit periodically throughout the year and permanent residents who may work from home or commute each day to the City.

Many go fishing on these rocks, and end up drowning. There are lots of warnings about the bad waves and rips and currents, but still more go out there with their fishing lines!! Most drownings are of fishermen, who tempt fate on surf-bashed rocks, and often are caught out while hauling in a fish or freeing a snagged line.

I love how you captured the fisherman busy with their sport oblivious to the crashing waves behind them. Certainly proves the point of the warning signs. It looks like you must have had a lovely day with your guests. It's nice to see you're enjoying yourself, I hope you've recovered well. Great action photo, I love the waves!

Hallo Janice!
A shot full of dynamics. The build up of this photo is most interesting and great. The rocks at the left give a most impressive frame - an all around wonderful picture!
Greetings from dull and grey Germany - without any winter - and have a nice weekend!
Frank

Hello dear Janice,

Great contrast you had and reached here with a perfect capturing, very well freezed the moment and I like the way you composed the rocks and the angry sea here, nice to have two fisherman in the frame that made the scene lively and friendly, well worked,

Best

Hi Janice,
It's been a little while since I took a look at your album but it's good to see you're presenting some wonderful images of NZ to the world!
This one is really great! I can almost FEEL the energy of these waves as they pound these rocks. As usual, your image is very high quality, the colours are beautifully saturated and still totally natural, and your composition and timing are near perfect.
Looking back through your album, I'm so impressed with what you've achieved and how you've developed (pun intended) with your photography. TOP JOB! :-)

Hugs,
Tony

Hello Janice
A great natural landscape, where it is appraised in his splendor, all the force of the nature in that cliff. The insurmountable composition, with both fishermen, a slight horizon, a blue sky and waves that emphasize.
John

Hi Janice,
No doubt, I could be impressed your country very much too! :-) As about the place - from your picture and note - yes, it's quite dangerous, but you know a lot people like adrenalin.. :-)
Very good shot to show atmpshere of this place. I like how you framed the image with rock and two fisheremen nearby standing agains strong waves. Thank you for sharing!

Arthur

Hi Janice. The lure of the fish is too strong for some. Great photo. You have caught the power of the surf well and have the fishermen to give scale. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

janice,
excellent capture of the moment here. nice framing with good color and detail. inclusion of the human element was a good idea.

Very good light in this beautiful place, I like the well placed fishermen in the picture, and also the' flat catch as they are detailed in the sky.
Good

Janice - Good Title - cliff fishermen always look to be in dangerous places especially when spray is breaking on the rocks. The rocks frame the men perfectly.
