Photographer’s Note

What makes the colours in the rainbow?

The traditional description of the rainbow is that it is made up of seven colours –
red,
orange,
yellow,
green,
blue,
indigo,
and violet.

Actually, the rainbow is a whole range of colours from red to violet and even beyond the colours that the eye can see.

This Double Rainbow appeared as we were having dinner in a café in Mangonui in Doubtless Bay in the upper North Island of New Zealand last week. Mangonui means 'big shark' in Maori.

The attractive harbour town of Mangonui has a long history. Early 1900’s, it was one of Northland’s busiest towns. Attractions include the old Mangonui Courthouse, a historic reserve and the aquarium on the wharf. There is much Maori and European history associated with the Mangonui area.

We had had a very wet day, and also a puncture in the middle of the heaviest downpour!! The rain had just stopped as we were eating and this beauty appeared at 7.51pm, so I had to go see it. The colours of the sky also kept changing as I was taking photos of it (for about 10 minutes).

And the next day was sunny and hot, just perfect for our holidays.
