Gateway to the City of Sails

Auckland City purchased the WESTHAVEN MARINA in 2004 for $46 million. Auckland city's residents and ratepayers are now the guardians of one of the most beautiful parts of the city's waterfront, Westhaven Marina.

It is the largest marina on the Waitemata Harbour and one of the largest marinas in the Southern Hemisphere. It provides secure berthage for 1,800 craft, with 1,400 marina berths and is one of the largest and most well-equipped marinas in the southern hemisphere. It is also in a magical position as the northern gateway to Auckland City, which is called The City Of Sails.

It offers a large range of facilities to boat users, including launching ramps, working berths, a mast gantry, haulout facilities, yacht grids for repairs and sewage pump out facilities.

Four of Auckland’s senior boating clubs are located at the marina – the Ponsonby Cruising Club, Richmond Yacht Club, Victoria Cruising Club and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

In the distance you can see part of Auckland City, with the Sky Tower taking up much of the attention.

Hi Janice,
Wow! Very impressive this harbor...So many boats in contrast with all those skyscrapers!
Very good.
Alex

Hello Janice, the sail boats captured my attention (I like sailing). The composition is fantastic specially the contrast of boats and skyscrapes. The photo is a little oversharpened.

Hi Janice,
Excellent skyline shot.
I like the depth given by the endless sails, the dramatic clouds, and trhe very sharp building details.
Cheers
Daniel

Excellent capture Janice, so many details crammed in. The contrast of boats and skyscrapers make this shot so unusual. Very good work. Nice to see you here ;-)

Hi Janice, very nice picture here ! I like this one better than the one you posted on TL today. I love the compo (layer of boats, layer of buildings, layer of sky). I find it very appealing.

Hi Janice

It's been a while since I was in Auckland, & the skyline has certainly changed! Good use of repetition as a compositional element. Well done!

Hi Janice. This is an excellent viewpoint towards the skyline, being able to include the busy marina in the foreground, with the masts of the boats echoing the upward motif of the photo in such multiple manner. The light breaking through the gray layer of clouds casts a nice mood over this one. Sharpness seems to be very much at an upper level here.

Hi Janice,

Excelent one with all those masts being continued by the buildings and the tower. Very well done ! Great light, and I like those gateway repetition on the right.

It's a pity the picture is a bit damaged by the compression for TE, but I guess the original version is great, and without any artefact.

Well, you really have to remember where you let your boat, 'cos it's such a mess to find it back, good luck :o)

Cheers,
Youssef.

That truly is an amazing amount of sails. You have shown a great vertical shot, masts and scrapers all surging upwards. Thats really a wonderful view of the skyline. Great contrast and nice sharpness.

Cool shot Janice!!

I like this shot because it is VERY SHARP. The detail and focus is great, bad focus could totally ruin a shot like this. Great harbour shot. I like it!

Cheers,
~ Dan

Hello Janice,

This is a great skyline picture! Ever since I have been there, I really love the sky line of Auckland with the mighty Skytower. :) Your photo is really good, well exposed, perfectly composed and very well in focus. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Hi Janice. A beautiful photo. Great perspective. Nice to capture the numerous amount of boats in such as small area as you did here. The colours are lively and clear. Excellent to include the city's skyline in the background. Great composition. Thanks for posting this one for us to see...

Hi Janice - a classic and always stunning view of the skyline through a forest of sails, the dark clouds have really brought out the skyline, great work.

Hi, Janice.
Two cities in one frame – it is not bad at all.
The image is very well composed and the colours are beautiful. I’d like to see this place some day.
Thanks for sharing.
Plamen

Janice nicely framed with the beautiful skies making the shot more dramatic. Thanks for the shot and the info.

Hi Janice
What a wonderful graphic shot with all the boats lined up like that. The light is just perfect and I like the grey clouds. Very well composed.
Regards Toni

Hi Janice
Really well composed shot with the Skytower on the right dominating the masts, the dark clouds and the stunning light on the boats.
Nikki

Hi Jancie, and thanks for the great shot. A great combination of yachts and buildings, I immediately thought about "business and pleasure", the two faces of every city, how this applies to Auckland in particular. Your photo has made me willing to go back and visit that beautiful city once more! And thanks for the note!

Really nice shot with a foreground full of boats. The back line composed by buildings and the tower completes your composition.
I visited your country through your gallery and I liked it. It's said that New-Zealand is comparable to Switzerland (my country)sometimes.
Thank's for sharing.
Greetings
Pierre-André
