BLACK BACKED GULLS

The Black-backed Gull is the largest gull in New Zealand. In the adult, the head, neck, underparts, rump and tail are white, the back and upper wings are black with a narrow white trailing edge. The bill is yellow with a red spot at the tip of the lower bill. The eye is pale yellow and the legs greenish yellow.

First year birds are brown and in the second year the back is brown and the breast and neck are white flecked with brown.

By the third year the back and upper wings are brown and black.

The Black–Backed Gull has adapted well to human intervention over the centuries, from taking advantage of an abundant supply of insects and small animals off pasturelands, scavenging off refuse tips in the urban environment and foraging along the coastal front.

The Black-Backed Gull is a circumpolar navigator, living in and around the coasts of South America, South Africa, south-east Australia and New Zealand. Being a scavenger by nature, the Black–Backed Gull lives and breeds in a multitude of places, from rocky ledges to open areas of pasture.

So I think this fellow must be a 2-3 years old juvenile. I captured him as I was walking under the cliffs at Murrays Bay this week.

Nice picture, Janice. Very good composition.
Regards, Ilana

I really like this one Janice, the way the rocks seem to almost encircle him is nice, as are the little waves at the top of the photo. I like where you've placed him in the photo at the lower right, and the frame compliments the photo nicely. Reminds me of the years growing up on the Oregon Coast.

A simple but delightful photo, Janice. The young gull is well placed in the composition and the way it alertly surveys the environment is nicely captured. The rocks establish a moderately graphical quality, and the ensemble with the sea water looks nice in the very natural colors. Good notes, too.

Really nice, Janice, composition, point of view, colors, sharpness, all is perfect!
And your note too!
Bravo!
Claude

I like very much this one with a lot of beautiful elements in.
Well thought and well built, and also according to the 18/55
a lot of proximity from the subject.
For the quality I wonder if it is a crop in a bigger or if there is a little "bougé", or even a "not larg DOF", but a bit sharp would have given a great composition, instead of a very good composition :))))
Whatever it is I Like it

I like it,and great note,well done!
Your low POV is great here, and the view without the sky is great.
A good perspective, too, details are fine and the colors are real which I think it's one of great point for the shot.

The note and the picture are a wonderful way to respect wildlife. The portion of sea with his habitants learning living in is great and a niced sharing Janice!

Hi Janice
An excellent picture. First because the gull is cleverly placed in the bottom left corner, letting us see what he is looking at, and second because the rocks emerging from water constitute a living and beautiful scene.

Good capture, Janice, I'm surprised you didn't put this one on TrekNature! Good POV and composition.
