A family enjoys the tranquility of the setting sun on the Esplanade at Russell, the oldest European town in New Zealand, in the Bay of Islands. Originally known as Kororareka, the town had such a notorious reputation as the 'hell-hole of the Pacific', that the name was changed to Russell after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi with the Maori in 1840. Today Russell is a tranquil beautiful spot which belies its earlier infamous reputation.

It's amazing that this gorgeous place had such a terrible nick-name! I actually looked it up on Google, curious to know why it was so hellish. It certainly looks like paradise now. :-) I like the golden tones in this photo and the silhouettes of the leaves from that tree on the bank. The leaves make wonderful patterns and fill the top of the frame nicely.

Hi Neil - beautiful composition here. You use the tree to really good effect, both to block the harshest light from the sun and to create an intricate and detailed silhouette at the top of the frame. But you get the most beautiful aspects of that light as it's reflected on the water and as it gives the people sitting a nice outline. And there's even a tiny bit of it peeking through the tree, like a glimmer, as it's about to fade away. Beautiful work.

Beauty sunset you've captured here, the colors are rich and soothing to the senses. More than anything else, I think you created a wonderful atmosphere, the last light of the day can really work magic, and you've transformed it into a pleasing and calm image. It also feels very, for lack of a better term, friendly... a place and a time where people can get together to enjoy the view and each others company. Very well taken and presented. Thanks for sharing the moment. Have a great day.
