Photographer’s Note
Certain mountains have a special presence, an ethereal quality that mere words cannot adequately describe: a photo can sometimes capture a rare special moment, when the elements of rock, ice, clouds and light come together for one of Nature's loveliest vistas.

Hi Jeff,
I don't know what Neat Image is, and I don't know what a RAW image is, but this sure is a neat image showing the raw power of Mt Cook. Perfect exposure and sharpness. Like yvesetnat, I would like to know from where you took the photo - on the ground near Mt Cook village or in a plane?

Hello Jeff,
This is the finest photograph of Mt. Cook among the dozens I've seen over the years. I see that you took it in the Spring of last year, and posted it just six weeks later. You do have some superb shots, and you've clearly tried out a few cameras in the process of taking all these photographs.
I noticed from your Intro note that you live in Perth. Unhappily, I have not been to Australia or to New Zealand. In December of 2001, I had been scheduled to take a cruise, ostensibly to give some lectures over a four-week period. Unhappily, 9-11 happened, and the number of cancellations by passengers, and just the uncertainty of travel made it impossible for me to come. But as I sometimes make calculations for my students in university, the point diametrically opposite ours in Virginia is very close Perth, 12,800 km through the center of the earth. And although gravitation outside the earth drops as the inverse square of the distance, inside the earth the force varies linearly, just as in a spring. Accordingly, if one were to drill a very long hole that connects Virginia/Washington, DC to Perth, then jump into the hole, one would oscillate just like a spiring, taking 88-minutes for a round trip.
With such beautiful sites in Australia and New Zealand to behold, it might be worth it.
Warm regards,
Bulent
