Photographer’s Note

This was taken from my helicopter flight from Queenstown to Milford Sound.

From Kinloch at the end of Lake Wakitipu we headed into the mountain range and followed the famous Routeburn walking track and then over to Hollyford which is about half way between Kinloch and Milford Sound.

From Hollyford we followed the river and then through a narrow opening between the Darren mountains which opened up to this wonderful view of Lake Marian.
Lake Marian is in a hanging valley, formed by glacial action. There is a walking track from the Hollyford road but it is only for the fit and the adventurist, not an easy 3 hour walk from what I read.

We flew over the lake and then a hair raising ascent up over the snow capped mountains and into Milford Sound.

I like this close view on the lake, a blue gem withing the mountains.
I like those grey lines on the mountain. A very wild and beautiful landscape

Hello Jude,

You really got me with these helicopter shots. Great views, only possible to take from a such a flight. It's not only the stunning view, but what i really like are those patches with light over the hills, light and shadow, wonderful contrast. The traces of snow and the river at the end tells us the story how the lake was formed, also by your interesting note....thanks for bringing this one up, really good shot.

Amazing bowl like valley and lake. Play of sunlight and shadow looks great. Highlights on the background montain face look special, is it snow?

what an awesome shot, the bird eye perspective looks great here, you really do have an unique shot here, I guess not many people had the opportunity to take these kind of images out of a helicopter. Great one, I like it a lot!

A beautiful scene full of much clouded light, which adds atmosphere.

Congratulation for the set of pictures shot during your helicopter ride... Must have been gorgeous !
I like this one very much, with colours enhanced by some tiny cloud shadows.
